Today would have been my dad's 100th birthday. We lost him ten years ago but still think of him every day. We will definitely lift a glass or two (or three) in his honor when we get to Las Vegas this week. Happy Birthday pops!
Harmony, Ca (population 19, btw) is a little slice of heaven. Just finished lunch and now enjoying a bottle of Harmony Cellars Chardonnay. Love it here.

🇺🇸 This is Ralph Rose. He was the U.S. flag bearer at the 1908 London Olympics. Every nation that marched past King Edward VII dipped its flag. Except Ralph and the United States.
Rose, a big shot-putter, kept the Stars and Stripes upright as the team passed the royal box.
The line later attributed to teammate Martin Sheridan, “This flag dips to no earthly king,” is almost certainly legend. The act itself was real.
The practice wasn’t locked in right away. Americans dipped at some Games and held the flag high at others. It became fixed policy ahead of the 1936 Berlin Olympics so the flag would not be lowered before Adolf Hitler.
In 1942 Congress wrote it into the U.S. Flag Code: the flag “should not be dipped to any person or thing.”
It has stayed that way. When the American flag passes a head of state at an Olympic opening ceremony, it stays aloft.
Thanks, Ralph! 🫡🇺🇸

The deadliest famine in human history wasn't a natural disaster. It was engineered by a communist government.
In 1958, Mao Zedong launched the Great Leap Forward to turn communist China into an industrial giant overnight. Peasants were forced off their land and onto massive collective farms.
Private farming was banned.
To hit impossible steel quotas, villagers melted their own pots, tools and plows in backyard furnaces. The metal came out worthless. And grain rotted in the fields, because the farmers who should have been harvesting it were making steel instead.
Terrified to report failure, local officials sent Beijing wildly inflated harvest numbers. The state then seized grain based on those fake figures and left entire villages with nothing.
Even as people starved, the government kept exporting grain and refused foreign aid, in order to protect the image of the revolution. It blamed the deaths on bad weather.
When a top general warned Mao the policy was killing millions, Mao purged him and pushed harder still.
Estimates of the dead run from around 15 million to 45 million, and some historians go even higher. It remains the worst famine ever recorded.
Not drought. Not war. A communist government that starved its own people.

One by one, every Marine around him was killed or wounded.
Mitchell Paige was the last able bodied man left at his position on Guadalcanal.
He didn't retreat.
He moved from machine gun to machine gun, firing each one himself as the Japanese continued advancing.
Then reinforcements arrived.
Paige fixed bayonets and charged.
This is the story of Mitchell Paige..🧵1/5

Immigrants arriving at Ellis Island in 1903 had to pass a doctor’s exam that checked for diseases like tuberculosis and trachoma. In 1906, 12,432 people were turned away at the door. The ones who got in brought $25 MILLION in cash with them, because they knew nobody was going to hand them anything.
There was no welfare, no food stamps, and no Medicaid. They had to actually work, or they were sent back.
Also, Back in 1903 assimilation was the goal. Congress passed a law in 1906 requiring anyone who wanted citizenship to speak English, and companies like Ford ran their own schools to teach English, safety, and American history. A Ford English School diploma even counted toward a person’s citizenship application.

Thanks for a good time #Vegas! We were only there for 36 hours this time, but managed to play at Planet Hollywood, Silverton, and Green Valley Resort. Took a little money from all three. For a change. We're small timers, but we have a ball!
File this under "jobs I'm not intreested in. Also file Planet Hollywood under "Places I'll never stay at again".

Ludwig von Mises was born 145 years ago today. Here’s what the Austrian economist had to say about socialism:
“The champions of socialism call themselves progressives, but they recommend a system which is characterized by rigid observance of routine and by a resistance to every kind of improvement.
They call themselves liberals, but they are intent upon abolishing liberty. They call themselves democrats, but they yearn for dictatorship. They call themselves revolutionaries, but they want to make the government omnipotent.
They promise the blessings of the Garden of Eden, but they plan to transform the world into a gigantic post office. Every man but one a subordinate clerk in a bureau.”
