5 October is the deadline to tell HMRC you need to file for 2025/26. Here's what most people get wrong
"I never cashed out to GBP, so there's nothing to report."
Wrong. Crypto to crypto is a disposal. Spending it is a disposal. That altcoin you swapped for BTC in 2025 and forgot about? Disposal.
"I made a loss, so HMRC won't care."
You should care. Losses only count if you report them, and you have 4 years to do it. Unclaimed losses are money left on the table against your future gains.
The annual exempt amount is now just £3,000. Gains above it are taxed at 18% or 24%.
Since 1 January 2026, UK exchanges have been collecting your details under the OECD's Cryptoasset Reporting Framework. The first data reaches HMRC in 2027.
Your 2025/26 return is the last one you file before they can see much much more
Moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposal. But if your software treats it as one, your figures are wrong.
Most Koinly reports I review need fixing before they're fit to file.
Missed earlier years? Fix it before HMRC write to you. Coming forward first generally means lower penalties than waiting for a nudge letter.

HMRC returned my tax return this year because apparently I’d answered one of the questions incorrectly.
The question was:
“Do you have anyone dependent on you?”
I replied:
“1.5 million illegal immigrants, 1 million crackheads, 3.4 million unemployable shirkers, 112,000 scroungers, 500,000 neurodiverse lazy bastards, 85,000 criminals currently in prison, 650 MPs in Westminster and one Asian midget who says he’s the Mayor of London.”
HMRC replied:
“This answer is unacceptable.”
So I wrote back:
“Who did I leave out?” ☺️🤓😂👊🏽
