🇩🇰 FC København are the most successful club in Danish football and a regular name in the Champions League. Formed just 33 years ago, success came immediately. They won the Danish top flight in their first ever season. That is what makes this campaign so surprising. The defending champions now sit in the relegation half of the split. After losing four league matches in a row for the first time in their modern history, FCK find themselves 7th in the table with just two matches remaining before the league splits. They have endured winless four-game spells before, once in 2020 and once in 2013, but those runs included draws. This time it is four straight defeats. FCK are one point behind 6th-placed Sønderjyske, who currently sit above them and also have a game in hand. To find the last time they finished this low, you have to go back to 1999/00 at the start of the millennium, when they ended 8th during a spell in which they failed to win the league for eight consecutive seasons. Since then, they have finished in the top three in every season bar one, in 2017/18. On paper, none of this should be happening. FCK have a squad market value of around €73m, the second highest in the division. By comparison, Sønderjyske operate with the youngest squad in the league and a market value of just €14m. Their run in the cup is the only thing keeping European hopes alive. FCK are in the semi-finals and lead 2-1 after the first leg against Viborg. But even winning the cup would only bring Europa League qualifying rounds, a long way from the Champions League nights their supporters are used to. Their next match on the 21st could define the direction of the season. They face OB, who sit just two points behind them. A defeat would mean five straight league losses and could see OB move above them in the table just before the split locks them into the bottom half. For a club built on dominance and Champions League football, slipping into the relegation group would be one of the biggest shocks in Danish football in recent years.
