Thank you Mel Gibson for shining a light on an issue most New Zealanders haven't even heard about. 🥝 🇳🇿 THREE BILLS ARE REWRITING THE RULES AROUND GENE TECHNOLOGY, GMOs, AGRICULTURAL BIOTECH AND WHAT CAN ENTER THE NZ FARMING SYSTEM. 🧬 GENE TECHNOLOGY BILL 🧪 HSNO AMENDMENT BILL 🚜 ACVM AMENDMENT BILL Put simply, the rules governing what enters NZ farms, animals and our food system are being overhauled rapidly - without widespread public awareness or informed consent. These Bills remove or weaken long-standing safeguards designed to protect human health, our environment and rate-payers. New experimental biotechnologies haven't suddenly become safer. If anything, as gene technology, synthetic biology and AI become more powerful and complex, now with brand new risks and unknown consequences - we need MORE scrutiny, stronger safeguards and greater transparency, not less. And once a GE or GMO organism is released into the environment, you can't simply recall it. Genetic contamination can't be undone. For farmers and organics that raises serious questions around contamination, liability and protecting GE-free production. For consumers, it's about choice, traceability and knowing what's in our food. For NZ exporters, it's about protecting the trust, reputation and premium markets we've spent decades building.
