VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for offside – and determined that Haaland was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.
The VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn’t play the ball.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Per IFAB Law 11, a player in an offside position can be penalised for clearly attempting to play the ball (or other obvious actions) if it impacts an opponent, even without touching it.

The behaviour of the players in this Sunderland vs. Arsenal game is beyond embarrassing.
If I acted like they are doing at work, (bearing in mind theyre working!), I’d be sacked.
With my Referee hat on, it’s also baffling as to how they don’t understand the laws.
It’s shambolic
And there’s still no firm evidence and justification for the Oxford vs. Reading match to be postponed further from the 8th!!
