🚀 Open-source tools are becoming a powerful advantage for energy project developers.
An Indian 🇮🇳 developer recently used #PyPSA to design 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) power purchase agreements (PPAs) for renewable and storage projects and is super happy!
EarthPV is a new & scalable #free and #opensource way to track solar photovoltaic capacity around the world from free satellite data 📊
Similar methods could be probably applied to other assets.

🚨JOB OPPORTUNITY: Want to work at the frontier of energy systems optimization and planning? Im hiring two postdoctoral (or more senior) researchers to join my ZERO Lab at Princeton University.
The ZERO Lab focuses on improving and applying optimization-based macro-energy systems to evaluate and optimize low-carbon energy technologies, guide investment and research in innovative energy technologies, and generate insights to improve energy and climate policy and planning decisions. See zero.lab.princeton.edu for more.
We are looking for scholars who can contribute to one of two research thrusts (or both):
1. Applied operations research: scholars will develop and implement novel methods to improve the computational performance and resolution of large-scale optimization models for energy systems planning and operations, leveraging decomposition methods, machine learning, multi-scalar modeling, and other creative techniques.
2. Applied energy systems modeling: scholars will help build and apply state-of-the-art macro-energy systems planning models to evaluate and optimize emerging low-carbon energy technologies and generate insights to improve energy and climate policy and planning decisions. A particular emphasis will be placed on candidates with familiarity with enhanced geothermal energy systems.
Find details and apply at: apply.interfolio.com/189640
And please help spread the word widely!

Energy systems are critical infrastructure, so shouldn't the open models used to plan them be treated as Digital Public Goods?

At @Eurelectric's conference in Helsinki last week, discussions highlighted how open energy models can provide a shared analytical foundation for planning future electricity systems. Do you agree?
Thank you to the organizers!

Grids of the world. Create your own grid posters ➡️ github.com/open-energy-trans…
New home decor trend: Grid posters.
#grid2poster tool turns real grid data into wall posters⚡🗺️ 100% open-source, 100% unreasonably cool.

🚨Many grids are not properly mapped. Missing lines, missing easy to find metadata etc. If we close the data gap, people can better perform policy and climate resilience studies, among others.
Check out grid inspector for #open grid data quality mapyourgrid.org/gridinspecto… & support our #MapYourGrid initiative mapyourgrid.org to fix those grid data gaps.
👀 doesn’t look like it, but China’s grid is one that would require some mapping attention. Stunning grid! ✨
UC Berkley lecturer teaches now #free and #opensource tool PyPSA and having a great time 🙌🏼
My favourite open energy modelling course with interactive notebooks: fneum.github.io/data-science…
Lecturers can copy, extend and share this course too. We wrote some instructions here: open-energy-transition.githu…
What’s cool with that one is that students don’t need to install anything
Plenty of other free and excellent energy modelling courses are listed here: forum.openmod.org/t/getting-…
Please help to extend this list. You have edit rights as forum member.

A NEW TWIST in Africa's soaring solar story:
It's now manufacturing its own panels. The factories use imported Chinese cells, which are 40% of the value of panels, keeping much of the value domestically.
9 GW of cells+wafers in Mar/Apr alone🧵
