we’re 5 years away from “you don’t have to listen to their music to be a fan of a band” discourse

i don’t think albums are the only right way to consume music. but it’s the rationale i see people have around the discourse that’s gross as shit to me

it’s also really sad to see older music fans scream at younger ppl because they don’t get it! it’s literally their loss, i feel sorry for them

and it’s deeper than that too! just as people being hyper prescriptive abt genres i feel often undercuts a deeper engagement with the medium, it’s nasty how many people are virtue signaling the opposite. it’s extremely sad to have zero curiosity about things you ostensibly like

back again to contribute to guitar discourse lol. i think something i don’t see people mentioning is that, 15 years ago, this wouldn’t be a piece of viral shortform content, but an experiment someone did and then maybe slotted into an actual song to give it context

my least favorite genre of music is whatever the fuck this is sure it's technical as fuck, but it has absolutely zero soul in it

we aren’t talking about the polyphia album, we’re talking about that one 20 second snippet of one song from the album. i don’t think this approach is generous for anyone who actually wants to listen to music lol

the fact that this is a kind of content people aim for also completely changes what people choose to make. it’s now just farm as much react as possible in as little time as possible, and that’s entirely its own mindset that betrays our standards of successful art

breaking twitter edge here to say that, regardless of my feelings on the music itself (i will not be disclosing), not a single one of u wants to live in a world where artists are afraid to be even a little corny. let it fuel u, and i don’t mean your pockets

so much of music criticism i’ve found is based in prescribing intent onto the artist on the basis of their end product. like how do you discern arrogance or ‘pretentiousness’ just from hearing a song? and it’s often used to detract people who are simply good at their instrument.
