ERCOT is setting an all-time demand record today at 91 GW, which is +17 GW vs the summer peak in 2021. But over the same period, maximum solar output is +27 GW. Add in the massive battery buildout, and wholesale power prices are actually lower now than they were 5 years ago.

My favorite marketing emails right now are from @crustdata
They sell enrichment, but their emails are about hiring and turnover in AI labs
They're a fun read, and build confidence in the product without selling it directly
(@tryramp and @grid_status do very similar!)

If you work in ERCOT, you know about GridStatus.
Now meet the person behind it.
Josh Rhodes recently sat down with Max Kanter, founder of GridStatus, the platform many in Texas rely on to navigate ERCOT’s vast trove of public data.

Minimizing emissions is important and should be one of the goals of the energy system. And yet, we have to be honest about where wind+solar+batteries are today on a very cold day in the northeast.
Everything below the red line is conventional generation.

You’ve seen the headlines about winter weather stressing the grid this weekend. But what does that actually look like in real time?
Our market analysis team is posting live updates all weekend on our site
There’s nothing like watching pros track the grid as it happens.

A nuclear unit came offline yesterday in MISO.
What started as a normal, unplanned outage may leave MISO without 1.25 GW of nuclear generation for an extended period of time.

We're not trying to trick you, but if you factor Halloween into your decision-making, you might be in for quite a treat.
Over the past 9 years, real-time load has underperformed almost all of PJM’s forecasts over the evening peak, precisely during prime trick-or-treating hours.

PJM's Capacity Auction (BRA) for 2026/2027 just cleared at the cap for the entire market.
This comes on the heel of Google's recent procurement of hydropower capacity in PJM, signaling no end to Big Tech's insatiable demand for datacenter power.

New forecast from the EIA estimates that wholesale power prices are due to jump 12% this summer with natural gas as the main culprit.
PJM’s hot summer with NG as the main generation source is driving most of the increase.
h/t @grid_status for the chart

Good illustration of how much the Texas grid has changed in just 6 years.
yellow = solar; purple = batteries; dark green = wind; blue = gas; brown = coal; light green = nuke

🔥This week saw 72 hours of extreme temps in the Eastern US — here’s how they impacted electricity prices in 60 seconds.
It was a clear reminder: summer risk isn’t going anywhere, and cooling for those new demand centers only gets more difficult as temperatures rise.

Today was #2 all-time for batteries & #4 all-time for solar in ERCOT, per @grid_status. Demand exceeded 76,000 megawatts, well short of the June record, but those batteries were needed as 15,000 MW of gas & coal plants were offline today. Rare to see this many outages in June.

The @grid_status snowflake DB is so powerful.
This query gets every generator's output (MW), resource node price ($/MWh), and therefore revenue for every SCED interval in 2024... in 3.5 minutes.
Any visualization requests?

This is the fuel mix in ERCOT (Texas) for the past week (top) vs same week 4 years ago (bottom). Solar generation is in yellow. Solar barely registered in 2021; today it accounts for roughly 50% of generation during the day in the shoulder months.

It's becoming increasing clear the BESS are the marginal units. Prices slow thier climb for a brief moment before continuing to climb as BESS discharge falls off. This will drive longer durations. Price formation in ERCOT is fundamentally changing-get an optimizer who gets it 😤

Both NYISO and ISO-NE import millions of cheaper MWhs per year from Canada. With just 10% tariffs, this price advantage is nearly eliminated.
