Thank you to my friend @HughPhilpott for sending me The Singing Ambassador, a very entertaining diplomatic memoire about his time in Tajikistan. I had the pleasure of reading an earlier draft; it is wonderful to see it in print! Order the book here: amazon.co.uk/shop/uzambassad…

Our friend Anam is fundraising to install solar panels at the Karakoram Disability Forum in Skardu, Pakistan. Power cuts are common & PV will give the centre the energy independence it needs to keep the lights on.

#LivingHeritage exists because people keep it alive.
Across all regions, bearers, practitioners, civil society organisations, cultural and academic institutions and national and local authorities are working together to safeguard, transmit and celebrate living heritage.
Passed down from generation to generation, these traditions and practices provide communities with a sense of continuity and belonging.
On the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, @UNESCO recognises and celebrates the living heritage present in our communities and beyond: the knowledge, practices, craftsmanship, foodways, rituals, performing arts and social customs that connect people across generations and cultures.

Why does the UK need an embassy in Tajikistan?
In our latest blog, former UK Ambassador @HughPhilpott explains how a visit to a Tajik tea house helped demonstrate the real value of diplomacy: understanding a country, its people and its culture.

Oversized pumpkins, tomb-dwelling bats, poisonous plants, enormous spiders… there’s a lot of biodiversity at Halloween! This month’s press release for @ecogov_uz has a decidedly spooky feel 👻 mailchi.mp/37ff3e12a696/spoo…

This is so gutting. The white peak of the Matterhorn is the quintessential symbol of Switzerland, now stripped of its snow and glaciers. Meanwhile, Albert Rösti, our far-right minister of energy, environment and transport, is a climate-denying fossil-fuel lobbyist. Fun times.
