only two situations where violent clashes with the state helps you achieve desired social change: 1. you are attacked by the state first and you don't retaliate by fighting back or rioting 2. you successfully lead an insurrection otherwise riots = more votes for your opposition

everyone takes that one MLK quote out of context (the whole point is that you shouldn't simply condemn riots without also condemning the conditions that create them) IMO celebrating mindless rioting is very indicative of powerlessness and that powerlessness is not noble per se

Not really, given that superannuation tax concessions cost a lot in forgone revenue This only makes sense if you pretend that fiscal incidence isn't a thing and only spending matters
Australia escaped the horrors we see coming out of France right now with their pension spending.

The fiscal upside is real but it's political in nature: You can sell weaker/lower retirement income as something caused by market forces rather than having to directly reduce the age pension

Leaving old age welfare intact while letting the rest of the welfare state rot was and is good right-wing strategy Keep the boomers voting for you and foster resentment against old age welfare among young people
i have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that eventually the boomer property tax revolt will foment a reverse-polarity version in young people ("well then why should i keep paying Social Security taxes?") and the entire concept of cooperative public goods disintegrates

It's a great way to split the welfare coalition and undermine social solidarity The really difficult thing is you can't exactly let the boomers off the hook for it either

This poem manages to patronize both America and every other country in the world at the same time. It’s kind of incredible how trite it is. Sub-Rupi Kaur literature

A lot of philosophy-infused AI discourse is ridiculous because it boils down to this: "Look at this dumb layperson who believes [contentious view held by some philosophers of mind]. As an expert, I can tell you [contentious view held by some philosophers of mind]."

Gillis’ monologue wasn’t great but so much in this video captures the rancid off-putting vibes of Peak Woke. Treating a joke as a serious thesis; rephrasing Gillis to make it seem worse; the tone of sneering, smug superiority. Hope we’ve seen the last of elites talking like this.

The buttoned-down geeks won WW2, then came home and led the nation to the greatest prosperity it ever knew. The "savage violence" roid monkeys lost a war to the Taliban, then came home and sold crappy "veteran owned" coffee.

That’s a military tradition that needs to fade away. There’s people who like yourself underperform at you PMOS and should be relegated to such duties. However the rest of combat arms should only focus on winning its nations wars.

I don't think Zohran is committing genocide
Replying to @petersterne
Anti-Mamdani chants at the protest: “Zohran, what do you say? How many kids did you kill today?” “700,000 dead. Mamdani, your hands are red!” “Traitor, traitor, come on out! You sold all your people out!” “Zohran, you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide!”
