ALT Digital Humanities 2022 conference poster entitled Creative Flows: Artistic Inspiration in/through/with Katherine Dunham’s Transnational Circulation. The Asia-Pacific region was long part of Katherine Dunham’s choreographic imagination. She premiered her island ballet “Rara Tonga” in 1938 before traveling for the first time in 1956-58 to 21 cities across Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Malaya, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan, during which she brought new artists into her company and which influenced future choreographies. A program draft from a 1959 nightclub performance in Monte Carlo includes “Baby-San,” “Haka,” and “Planting Rice.” A data visualization tracks the multi-directional connections between the places to which Dunham traveled, the places of inspiration that she cited for her choreographies, and the passports that the performers carried. This data positions Dunham within transnational creative flows between the Asia-Pacific and the Afro-Caribbean and Americas.
