A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children. I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.

I'm informed Guardsmen asked in at 'ultra short notice' & 'squeezed into uniforms' not ready. Storemen, clerks etc. gathered to form the guard 'at the whim of the PM' No excuse ofc but that's context IG have suffered under Capita - Ireland ignored. Height min. went long ago..
Like quite a few on here I thought this photo op was ill judged. The soldiers are unarmed and look like they were turned out in a hurry (in what sense is this an ‘honour guard’?). Theme park Britain

I thank His Majesty King Charles III for the audience. It is important for me to have the opportunity to personally thank him for his unwavering support for Ukraine. We appreciate all the assistance provided by the United Kingdom. 🇺🇦 🇬🇧 @RoyalFamily Pictures are by Aaron Chown from Press Association.

This is a slightly surreal Commons statement from Andy Burnham The major unfolding Ukraine crisis on which the UK is expected to lead, and an Iranian state attack on Britain, have been mentioned only very briefly almost as causal asides Instead the PM is headlining this Commons statement, his first appearance in front of Parliament in weeks, on minor developments in EU relations that frankly pale into insignificance in comparison And even the EU section of the statement has been derailed because of the row over his Brexit/Russian interference comments

Labour need to make it clear they would never enter into any kind of coalition with the Greens in their current incarnation & Andy Burnham needs to be asked personally whether he is still committed to PR given it would hand an openly antisemitic party serious legislative power.

Helen Miller of the IFS eloquently makes the obvious point - scrapping the triple lock in its current form does not ‘free up’ money for social care at all It removes an unfunded cost for the future, but the is not the same for thing as finding the money needed to provide personal care free at the point of need That is going to have to come from elsewhere - most likely increases in income tax and national insurance Burnham will have to spell out those tax rises in his manifesto and sell them to voters as part of his grand bargain on social care. It is not going to be easy
A better way to think of savings from the triple lock : Under the old triple lock, government would have had to find an extra £11bn by the end of the next decade. Now they won't have to. They've removed an unfunded pressure. This does not translate into cash for social care

Beneath all the global economic turbulence, the UK economy is growing more strongly than expected. Of the seven wealthiest nations we’re still at the top of the league table and business continues to invest.
UK Q2 GDP growth revised up to 0.5% by ONS. So top growth in G7 in q1, second in q2 to Canada, overall fastest growth of g7 economies so far in 2026. GDP per capita also revised up to 0.5% growth. Definitely defying the suggestion that the Iran war would hit UK hardest.

Fiscal discipline “underwrites every promise this government makes”… “we can’t succeed without it”. Chancellor says he’ll be keeping a “buffer against uncertainty”, ie fiscal headroom. So where does he get the money from? If not borrowing, then tax rises?

Absolutely huge explosion in Kyiv just now, and subsequent most distant blasts. Lots of chatter about a long night of ballistic threats. Dangers constant these days. At times, Kyiv feels like a front line city. People say it's more dangerous than Kharkiv at the moment.

So.... £2,485 on glasses for a PM was "sleaze rotting our politics to the core" but £72,000,000 in a single day for Nigel Farage is celebrated as hitting "the jackpot" and a "war chest..." Whatever is happening here is happening in plain sight. You decide!

UK gilts chunky rise this morning to new multi decade high yields, catching up with what has happened globally (markets closed in UK) since the comments in Jackson Hole on Friday esp from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.. 10y yield at 5.21% a new high since 2008. For reference, last OBR assumption in March was 4.5%. Similar multidecade highs across the G7, amid expectations of rate rises increase. Little comfort to UK Govt as PM sets out stall on growth. Finance ministers and central bankers meeting in G20 format in USA, Chancellor pointing to faster growth in UK so far in 2026, and better productivity news, and commitment to fiscal discipline. Much surprise there at the appearance in person of the Russian finance minister, at invitation of USA. Would appear to pave way for Putin at g20 summit in Miami in December.
