The underworld is waiting, and the descent is yours. A preview of Xibalba by @RebeccaRose Xibalba places the viewer inside a mortal soul’s final passage through the caves and cenotes of the Mayan Underworld. Presented in an unbroken first-person perspective, the journey moves through spaces of death, trial, transformation, and possible rebirth. Within Digital Encounters, the work speaks directly to the programme’s central question: In a world of infinite information and impulses, what carries enough meaning to become myth? Here, myth becomes an experience of surrender. The familiar falls away, the self begins to dissolve, and the viewer is carried toward the terrifying unknown. More than 500 individual PNGs were spatially collaged to construct the work’s 3D environment, with camera movement guiding the viewer through the descent. Its original soundtrack was created with AI assistance, then hand-edited and synchronized by the artist. Rebecca Rose creates spatially collaged animations that combine monochromatic figures, vivid environments, and dynamic storytelling to build immersive cautionary tales.
