Exc: A US defence giant has emerged as the frontrunner for a £2bn contract to build military satellites for Britain - hours after Ukraine's access to American systems was throttled. The Ministry of Defence is understood to be pushing for Lockheed Martin to be awarded the SkyNet 6 deal, in a break with current UK-based supplier Airbus. This is despite the current row over restrictions on Kyiv's use of Starlink. It's triggered fears that Washington could gain leverage over how Britain uses the vital satellite system, particularly in potential future crises. Downing Street thought to have intervened to review the decision... Full story in link below:

NEW: British police forces, including the Met, used spy software said to have been secretly developed in Russia. British forces have used Oxygen Forensics software to break into the phones of suspects during live investigations. US prosecutors said the same software had been used by the Russian security services. The Virginia-based company behind the tool has been accused in the US of having hidden its Russian ownership. It's American chief executive and a Russian national were arrested last week. British police forces have now been told to assess and identify any issues with Oxygen Forensics software, and the Met has paused its use of the firm's tools while an investigation takes place. The software is said not to have contained malicious code and there is no indication that customer data were accessed without authorisation. telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2…

i fully fund my 401k and i think there’s essentially zero chance AI kills all humans in the next decade. i think this is a pretty common view that gets less attention.

This is all so strange. Why are you glad he spoke out? Do you…think what Anthropic is doing bad? What is it you think he’s calling attention to and why don’t you resign too if you agree?
Jacob was a senior researcher who joined Anthropic in May. My Anthropic colleagues and I had been trying to recruit him for ~2 years, because we knew he was a strong researcher at OpenAI. Before he left, I pitched him to stay and join my team, and I was sad he decided to leave, as are many of my colleagues. 100% agree with him that AI poses serious risks to society, and I'm glad he's speaking out!

Oh good more doom before breakfast - until June, the head top scientist at the UK AI Security Institute
I think we have a ~50% chance of all dying as a result of superintelligence, mostly due to actions in the next few to 10 years. I don't expect to have that resolved to below 10% or above 90% before we either make it through, or we don't. We will have to act despite uncertainty.

As Von Neumann said about Oppenheimer’s performative angst over the atomic bomb: “Some people profess guilt to claim credit for the sin.”
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

Amazon's Kiro coding bot literally did the finale of Silicon Valley on AWS by deleting a chunk of its code, cracking scoop from the FT's @rafeuddin_
On two separate occasions Amazon’s Kiro AI assistant caused an AWS outage, one that was 13 hours long. Amazon blames this on “user error not AI error,” which is one of the most embarrassing things you could ever say as a human being
