St. Louis Man Discovers His Father Is Michael McDonald

Imagine finding out, deep into middle age, that you’re the son of the honey-gargling king of yacht rock. Michael Goessling, a St. Louis resident, recently had just such an experience when he found...

One way you know this take is wrong (“should be”), is that Don showing his kids the house he grew up in, like 8 minutes after the Hershey pitch, feels far more climactic, in the literal sense of climax—a disruption of character/narrative equilibrium
fraser@fraserlikelaserSep 25
MAD MEN would have been the undisputed greatest show of all time if it wasn’t for one crucial misstep (spoiler warning): while jon hamm is generally brilliant as don, the emotional climax of the show should be the Hershey pitch, and hamm just doesn’t quite get there.

Many people’s response to a sincere, non-self aggrandizing account of someone who wanted her child to live/learn in a world that didn’t take for granted the expendability of the most vulnerable (poor, black) young people

Underrated part beside NHJ clearly being an absent parent was how much the aesthetics of having a Black child in Black schools with Black friends mattered more than outcomes. She for sure sneered at anyone in her circle whose Black kids had white peers and the social and cultural inclinations that came with.

A lot of people on here have a basically classist and racist “ghettoize the ‘unruly’ students” philosophy and think they’re being hard nosed realists because an idealist didn’t single handedly change the system they are propping up
Helen Bolton 🖤@hboltonSep 20
Seeing a bunch of people taking away “the school choice system is good” from that NHJ story is making me feel nuts

Indie rock is great. It's pop music for aspirationally discerning snobs who love pop music but also respect mystery and playful amateurism. As Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene once defined it for me, "You're trying to do a romantic thing but you don't have chops"—beautiful
Lin-Manuel Rwanda@facebookvillainJul 8
indie rock sucks. it's pop music for losers who are trying to impress a crush more than develop a personality. it's often the most trite, boring, rehashed bullshit from the 60s repackaged for halfway braindead millennials so they can congratulate themselves on avoiding the radio

Short stories are suddenly and bizarrely driving a huge number of sales in Hollywood right now. Many are from Reddit or unpublished. Established screenwriters are getting in the game despite never having written a short story before. Why? This guy: lamaterial.com/p/short-stori…

How Short Stories Became Hollywood's Hottest Format

Not the literary kind. Studios and producers are snapping up pulpy genre pieces that are self-published, or not published at all.
