A head-turning new "Michigan First" ad from @AbdulElSayed - he names some issue he agrees with MAGA voters on, then plays a supercut of Fox News hosts/Tucker praising him or bashing Mike Rogers. semafor.com/article/10/23/20…

The only enemy pilot ever to bomb the mainland United States is buried in an Oregon forest.
The same forest he bombed.
September 1942. A Japanese submarine surfaced off the Oregon coast. A small seaplane rose from its deck. Nobuo Fujita dropped two firebombs into the woods near a little logging town called Brookings.
It had rained. The forest was wet. A lookout spotted the smoke, and the fire was put out.
He went home. After the war, he opened a hardware store. He never told his family what he had done.
Twenty years later, a letter came from Brookings.
A few young men in town wanted to invite him to their Azalea Festival.
The town was divided. The local paper said he should not come. People had lost sons in that war.
But the invitation stood.
Fujita told his family the truth for the first time. Then he told his daughter he was going.
He would bring the family sword. Four hundred years old. It had been in his cockpit the day he bombed them.
If Brookings was still angry, he would use it on himself. As a Japanese man, he would take responsibility.
He arrived in Oregon expecting to die.
Instead, he got a parade.
And they put him at the front of it.
The man who had come to burn their forest led their festival down Main Street.
So he took out the sword.
And he gave it to them.
They hadn't forgotten what he did. They simply decided what kind of people they were going to be.
He kept coming back. For the rest of his life.
He saved money for 23 years, through hard times, so he could bring three Brookings high school girls to Japan as his guests. The man who once flew over their town with bombs flew their children over the ocean.
In 1997, as he lay dying in a hospital in Japan, word came from Oregon.
Brookings had made him an honorary citizen.
A year later, his daughter carried some of his ashes back to the forest he had once tried to burn.
The sword still hangs in the Brookings library.
He came to set Oregon on fire.
Oregon gave him a place to rest.

I asked 30 Japanese 12-year-olds one question.
"What do you think of when you hear 'America'?"
(My nephew's teacher let me visit his class. I was not prepared.)
"Hamburgers the size of my head."
"Everything is big. Even the milk."
"Cowboys." Then a boy asked me, "Do cowboys still exist?"
I said yes.
The whole class cheered.
"They went to the moon."
I told them only Americans have ever walked on it.
The room went completely silent. Respect.
"The best baseball in the world. Even Ohtani had to go there."
"Superheroes. They all live in New York."
Then a quiet girl in the back raised her hand.
"My grandma says when the tsunami came, American soldiers came to help her town. She still has a photo with them on her fridge."
Nobody said anything for a while.
Then the teacher asked, "Who wants to go to America someday?"
Every hand went up.
Including the teacher's.

**PURE MICHIGAN? ***
This is not about vengeance.
This is about keeping a repeat offender from hurting someone else.
An 8-time felon hit my brother’s truck on Clio Road at 88 to 92 miles an hour in a 35 mile an hour zone. He was video-chatting a 14-year-old. He had drugs in his system. After the crash he told her not to call 911.
My brother choked to death on his own blood while holding his wife’s hand and telling her everything would be okay. She will never walk again. She will never be able to care for herself.
The original prosecutor bound him over on second-degree murder. A different prosecutor took the case and offered a plea to reckless driving causing death. According to my brother’s stepson, the family was told the decision on a plea was not theirs. I’ve been told the same thing directly — Michigan law gives victims the right to be consulted, not the right to control a plea. The sentence was 7 to 30 years. He could be out in April 2029.
Weeks earlier he had been pulled over for no license and bad plates while already on parole. The system left him with his keys. The police also destroyed the vehicles months before he was finally arrested.
The family was treated as an inconvenience. The arraignment was delayed for a year. When we tried to watch on video after taking time off work, the feed was never turned on. After the hearing was rescheduled because of the court’s own technical problems, the judge signed off by telling the defendant “Good luck.”
My brother’s stepson told me a victims advocate described me as “difficult” after I spoke up about how the family was being treated. Michigan’s Crime Victim’s Rights Act requires notice to siblings of a deceased victim. We had to fight for basic information.
At sentencing he said he was sorry. He said he would take my brother’s place. A man who is truly sorry does not spend years trying to undo the plea.
The Court of Appeals rejected the application for lack of merit. The deadline to ask the Michigan Supreme Court ends this week.
He has an end date.
Our family does not.
My brother’s grandson was six when this happened. He told the family he wanted the driver to kill him too so he could be with his grandpa.
The system failed my brother, his wife, our family, and the people of Michigan.
Is this the kind of justice system of Pure Michigan people expect?

At this time a one-mile evacuation has been ordered in Toledo, Ohio, following a massive hazardous chemical leak at a steel tubing manufacturing facility. The leak has released thick plumes of potentially toxic smoke into the surrounding atmosphere Exposure to the chemical may cause respiratory problems, eye irritation, and lung irritation, with reports of symptoms extending beyond the designated evacuation zone. Traffic cameras have captured massive plumes of smoke reportedly visible from approximately six miles away from the incident site. Air quality readings have reportedly reached an extremely hazardous AQI level of 805, raising concerns about potential exposure for residents outside the immediate evacuation area.
