The meat industry tries very hard to keep cameras out of factory farms and slaughterhouses -- and a new undercover video shows why. Some day, our descendants will wonder about our collective blind spot to animal cruelty. A gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/10/17/opini…

I love @SecRollins' ambition to Make America Humane Again. Here are seven things she could do to make good on it:
1. Withdraw her support for the Save Our Bacon Act, which would force states to sell pork from crated pigs.
2. Restore enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act -- the USDA now has fewer than 100 inspectors for 17,500 labs, zoos, and breeders combined.
3. Withdraw her Administration's lawsuit to force Michigan to sell eggs from caged hens.
4. Implement the Horse Protection Rule against soring — deliberately injuring horses' legs — which she has now delayed three times.
5. Withdraw her plan to eliminate any cap on kill line speeds at pork plants, which increases the risk that pigs are still conscious when killed.
6. Stop paying indemnities to egg producers who cook their birds to death via Ventilation Shutdown.
7. Keep the animal welfare rules for organics that her USDA has suggested gutting.
Animal welfare is the law, and we are enforcing it. 🐾🇺🇸
@SecKennedy and I brought together partners from @USDA, @HHSGov, the @TheJusticeDept, @EPA, and @LaraLeaTrump to strengthen enforcement and protect dogs.
This year, USDA has inspected more than 2,000 dog breeder and broker facilities, trained 98 inspectors, and created a new Animal Protection Bureau to improve compliance and address violations.
HHS has launched more than 20 initiatives to reduce unnecessary animal testing and advance human-based research methods.
I want to give a special thank you to Lauree Simmons, @BDRRescue, and other organizations who champion this important effort.
@POTUS’s administration will continue to fight for animal welfare, or as Bobby said: we’re going to Make America Humane Again.

A woman called Michelle Farnham is now 17 days into a 3 week protest, living in a cage, at Trafalgar Square, to try and save a pig called Luna (who lives in an identical cage). She stays there day and night.
It has not had any big coverage, as far as I can see. I think it's a bit of a shame that violent and disruptive protest gets so much coverage, while quiet sort of self-sacrificing things like this, that do not harm anybody or any property, get less attention.
Whether you or I agree with her, or what she's trying to do, what an impressive commitment, eh?

I was encouraged this week to see the leaders of the frontier labs agree on the need for them to slow down the pace of AI development. Given the stakes, it’s a good and necessary first step.
But I’m even more encouraged by the growing recognition that how this powerful new technology develops should be at the center of our public debate.
I’ve been watching the progress on AI for over a decade now, and one thing that’s clear to me is that the potential impact of this technology is not overhyped. It’s also moving at lightning speed – and even faster than those who are engineering it can keep up with.
I’m not an AI accelerationist who believes it will lead to some techno-utopia, and I’m not a doomer who thinks it will inevitably lead to humanity’s destruction.
But whether this technology results in amazing breakthroughs in medicine, energy and education or unleashes huge economic disruptions, greater inequality, and potential catastrophe will depend on the choices that we make right now – choices that should be made not just by the companies involved, but by all of us.
This is the developer equivalent of @matt_levine thesis that it's actually quite impressive to lose $1B

I OPPOSE the Save Our Bacon Act and any attempt to jam it into the Farm Bill.
This bill would gut state food safety and animal welfare laws, wipe out voter-approved protections, and strip states like NY of the right to set basic standards.
It's a giveaway to Big Ag and meat monopolies, punishing family farmers who followed the rules, while giving the biggest corporations more power to squeeze farmers and families.
Congress should be lowering food costs, not rewarding the monopolies driving them up. The Save Our Bacon Act does not belong in the Farm Bill, and I will fight to keep it out.

Prediction: the pork industry will come to regret pushing the Save Our Bacon Act.
Gestation crates have survived this long for one reason: most people don't know about them.
The Save Our Bacon Act fight is changing that. It's exposing millions of people — including some very influential ones — to what gestation crates actually are.
The pork industry can keep saying they're a "science-based" solution for "animal care." It will never win this debate. Anyone with common sense knows the crates are cruel.
Every additional day of public debate about the Save Our Bacon Act is a day closer to a world without gestation crates.

Switzerland v Bosnia and Herzagovina is the World Cup's group-stage match with the shortest combined coastline.
Switzerland is landlocked. Bosnia & Herzegovina reaches the sea through just 20 km of coast at Neum. This just beats Austria v Jordan, which has just 26 km.
Stay tuned for more cutting-edge, geography-based World Cup analysis.

If you were struck by Ezra Klein's recent cult of efficiency piece about pigs, give this one a read.
A neurotech company is implanting chips in the brains of dairy cows to maximize production. Critics say this raises serious welfare & regulatory concerns.sentientmedia.org/neurotech-…

per usual, @jasminewsun nails it. I'm on the beginning of my fourth hike uphill, this time in philanthrocapitalism and frontier research nonprofits. I have the opportunity to learn from the best in this space, and possibly become one of them. Very looking forward to this.

My @nytopinion colleague @ezraklein on how an obsession with efficiency can cost us our humanity — in this case, in how we (mis)treat pigs on factory farms, and how some in Congress aim to make this trade off worse. nytimes.com/2026/06/14/opini…

Some of us like efficiency (a lot), but we also like this (and agree with it).

You might think that factory farming is a system run by farmers, but you'd be wrong.
The processing companies - the ones that run the slaughterhouses - have most of the power in the market.
Many farmers are stuck in adversarial relationships with their processors, unable to switch because there's only one slaughterhouse in their area.
Often the interests of "the meat industry" and the actual interests of farmers are in complete opposition.

Denmark's new government just announced major pig welfare reforms.
They're banning the practices of restraining sows in farrowing crates, breeding them beyond their natural limits, and cutting off piglets' tails.
They're also requiring pigs get more space and rooting material. And they're stepping up farm inspections and penalties for cruelty.
All while the US Congress is trying to wipe out the few state laws that protect pigs via the Save Our Bacon Act buried in the farm bill.
Denmark just showed what's possible for pigs when voters demand it — and politicians listen.
Two weeks ago, I cycled ~160 miles over two days for Climate Ride's 2026 Green Fondo. In the process, my friends, family, and colleagues donated over $1200 to the Good Food Institute, supporting their work accelerating alternative protein innovation.
I'm incredibly thankful to be a part of this community making a real difference in the world! And if you'd like to join us and support a more sustainable, secure, and just food system, the final deadline for donations is June 30th: support.climateride.org/part…
Damn, now I want to see "blue-green of unprecedented saturation" before I die
Once in a while, science expands human capabilities. This is one such case. Super cool.
"Oz enables display of colors that lie beyond the
well- known, bounded color gamut of natural human vision"
"Subjects report that olo in our proto-
type system appears blue-green of unprecedented saturation"

Last Saturday, I rode the Wine Country Century to train for the Green Fondo of Northern California coming up in just two weeks. I'm using that two-day, 160 mile ride to raise money for the Good Food Institute. Thank you to everyone who's donated, and please consider joining them!
I'm cycling 160 miles over two days this May to raise money for the Good Food Institute. I need your help — 100% of donations go directly to GFI.
