For six months, Google Maps sent a slice of drivers in ten American cities down deliberately slower routes.
About 30 seconds slower on average, and under 2% of trips were touched. The experiment ran on roughly 100 of the most congested road segments in each city, switching on and off day by day so each city acted as its own control. The results are out now in Nature Cities, from Google Research with collaborators at Berkeley and Stanford.
The reasoning behind it is old and slightly counterintuitive. Every navigation app does the same thing: it finds you the fastest route right now, for you alone. When millions of phones do that at once they all pour onto the same handful of arteries, and those arteries stop being fast. Transport economists have been writing about the gap between what's good for one driver and what's good for the network since the 1950s. Nobody had tested a fix at city scale with real drivers, because you'd need to steer routing for a large share of a city's traffic, and about three companies on Earth are in that position.
So Google put a penalty on the worst segments during their worst hours, which nudged the routing engine towards alternatives of similar road class and comparable travel time, then measured what happened across the whole network on weekdays between 7am and 8pm.
On the targeted segments, traffic moved roughly 2% faster in the median city. Los Angeles got 4.56%, Atlanta 3.30%. Fuel burn on those stretches dropped between 0.5% and 1%. Across every road that saw a change in traffic, which covers around 80% of each city's driving, speeds rose 0.35%, reaching 0.5% during the morning and evening peaks. Total travel time on affected trips fell 0.69%. Their Bayesian model put the probability that the speed effect was genuinely positive at 99.8%.
That adds up to more than 1,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent saved per year, per city, in most of the places studied. Cars and vans account for around 10% of global carbon emissions, and the average driver spends about 2.6 years of their life behind the wheel, so a fraction of a percent across an entire road network is a serious amount of fuel.
Per driver, the saving comes to about 0.25% of an average journey, roughly one fortieth of the normal day-to-day wobble in how long the same commute takes. Nobody in those ten cities noticed anything, in either direction, including the people sent the long way round.
The authors are careful about what they haven't shown. They measured the immediate effect, not what happens once drivers work out the freed-up route is quicker and pile back onto it, which is the standard way road improvements get eaten. Their penalty scheme was deliberately crude, so the ceiling on the approach is unknown. And the underlying Google Maps data is commercially confidential, so nobody outside can check the numbers.
The finding sitting underneath all this is that a private company's routing algorithm has become a piece of transport infrastructure, tunable in the way a traffic light or a congestion charge is tunable. The obvious follow-up experiments are the ones a city government would want to run, not the ones a mapping company would.

Most experiments fail, and negative results rarely get published. This means LLMs are unaware of the outcomes of most experiments.

Many of us were taught that experiments are for testing hypotheses. In Ch 1 of Experimentology, our open methods textbook, my coauthors and I argue for something different: experiments are for estimating the magnitude of causal effects.

Using a sort of free-association method on LLMs, we sought to probe something like the cultural sub-conscious embedded in the model. We concretized this by asking which fictional characters are similar to the Jewish and non-Jewish attribute vector.

The past two weeks have presented a series of challenges, prompting me to step back and take stock, away from social media and the general public. The war with Iran has revealed deeply disturbing trends and realities about how many people are unable to have nuanced thoughts or to exercise and compartmentalize critical thinking that separates their disagreements from the current administration, with overt support for the despicable Iranian Regime.
Hamas in Gaza has been allowed to hold two million Palestinians as hostages, killing, torturing, and disappearing people, and preventing any progress toward rehabilitation and reconstruction. Israeli settler violence is out of control in the West Bank, and many seem perfectly fine with it. The state of “pro-Palestine” activism is in an embarrassing disarray, with the Palestinian cause in the diaspora being championed by the worst possible combination of extremists, agents of hatred and chaos, close-minded, highly unintelligent people, and promoters of terrorism, violence, antisemitism, and false narratives.
There is a never-ending cacophony of noise, unenlightened voices, and threats that come my way, always requiring security or the involvement of authorities to speak at events or just carry on. There is also a never-ending stream of really unconvincing, dumb commentary by supposed experts, journalists, and activists, whose relevance relies on vomiting continuous trash that keeps masquerading as helpful insights.
Then there is Washington and its brilliant culture, where many fake, uncompelling people act as backstabbing wolves, always hiding in sheep’s clothing. The most consequential city in the world is populated by a large number of government, NGO, and academic leftovers who contributed to the disastrous US foreign policies that brought our country to where it is today.
Though I believe in my work and I am ruthlessly focused on seeing progress towards a better pathway forward, the truth of the matter is that every single day consists of dealing with a Hamas-controlled Gaza, a Smotrich / Ben Gvir-dominated Israeli government, a confused and hesitant US administration, hopelessly useless and destructive “pro-Palestine” communities, and a large number of Arab and Muslim Americans living in parallel universes either totally disengaged from life in the Western world or fully enmeshed in the most destructive social and political positions that make working with them nearly impossible now.
One of my chief struggles is that, in an effort to reach unreachable audiences, I have pulled back on some of my harsh critiques and my desire to be brutally honest and transparent about my thoughts, truths, feelings, observations, assessments, analyses, and commentary. This has been especially true since arriving in Washington and creating the Realign For Palestine project, which is no longer just about what I think but about the bigger picture. And in that sense, I miss being able to truly speak my mind without “offending” people I am trying to build bridges with, but often appear so uninterested and unwilling to engage.
However, in that spirit, I have decided to go forward and continue sharing my thoughts online and in person without holding back. My goal remains to be constructive and a builder, not a destroyer. However, when one builds, this sometimes requires tearing down unhelpful narratives and structures that hinder progress and growth. Whether you are “pro-Palestine,” “pro-Israel,” “pro-Trump,” “pro-Iran, “pro-Gulf,” or anything else, the only way to defend your position and views is through evidence or logical argumentation, not emotions or mis/disinformation.
My top priority right now is exposing Hamas and focusing on how they have played a horrendous role in destroying the Gaza Strip, eroding Palestinian values, decimating the Palestinian people, and proving that anyone who supports them is a hateful, anti-Palestinian fascist.
