Afghan women and girls matter. Their dreams matter. Their education matters. And the world cannot afford to look away. They deserve every opportunity to learn, grow, and lead -- not because of what they have endured, but because of who they are and all they have to offer the world. I couldn't be prouder of @sbasijrasikh for funding a scholarship in partnership with @whtrust_ox at the @UniofOxford that will give one Afghan woman the opportunity to study there every year, in perpetuity. What a beautiful investment in generations of Afghan women to come.

Thank you! I want to say that first, and say it clearly. Thank you to every one of you who’s sent messages or posted congratulations about the @TIME 100Next list and my appearance on it. I’ve read messages in Pashto, Dari, English – I could not be more honored. And as I’ve said, even though this award is for me, it’s not about me. This award is an acknowledgement of the generational bravery of Afghan women. An acknowledgement of the Afghan men who stand beside their mothers, sisters, wives, daughters. An acknowledgement of the people of Rwanda and of the ecosystem of organizations and activists and individuals who have never looked away from Afghanistan. This is our award, our honor. The world is watching us now. They will see us standing together. They will see us accomplish so much.

In a world that can be unkind and unfair, there are incredible people in the world like @sbasijrasikh. She’s a role model and hero to many. She’s not just leading Next, but she’s leading TODAY. I encourage you to follow her & work and support @solaafghanistan & @SOLAxOnline
Today, @TIME named me as one of the members of the 2026 TIME100 Next, their annual list of 100 individuals who are defining the next generation of leadership: time.com/collection/time100-… I’m proud, I’m humbled – and I know that while this honor is for me, it’s not about me. It’s about the women of Afghanistan and the hope they carry like fire in their hands. It’s about the students of @solaafghanistan, the Afghan girls who will change the world. It’s about the resilient SOLA global village of friends and supporters. It’s about you, reading these words, because you are with us. And that means everything. I hope you’ll take a moment to look over the full list: time.com/collection/time100-…. This is a proud and humbling day, and a day that I know will inspire us all. There is work to do, and we will do it.

How can we use AI to better serve the learners our education systems have failed to reach? Recently, I had the opportunity to present the work of @SOLAxOnline at the @BrookingsGlobal's Center for Universal Education, focusing on an idea at the heart of our work: context matters. At SOLAx, we’re not simply digitizing the Afghan curriculum. We’re using AI, alongside Afghan educators and learners, to reimagine it in the image of an Afghan girl -- her language, her surroundings, her experiences, and the realities of her life. It was wonderful to see that conversation continue in this thoughtful piece by @NasrinSiddiqa on AI, education, and women’s agency. I’m especially grateful to Nasrin for highlighting something that matters deeply: girls should not simply be passive consumers of learning. Their perspectives, experiences, and aspirations should help shape the learning itself. Worth a read: 👇

Thank you for sharing the work of SOLAx with us for this report. It was inspiring to see the many different ways educators are trying to keep Afghan girls learning, often in extraordinarily difficult circumstances. As you say, Afghan girls can’t wait.
Afghan girls can’t wait. I’m inspired by and deeply grateful for the Afghan educators and changemakers finding courageous and innovative ways to keep the doors to education open for girls across Afghanistan. Thank you, @rachelreid6, for shining a light on this urgent issue and for including the work of @SOLAxOnline alongside so many remarkable efforts helping Afghan girls continue to learn.

Deeply grateful for @sbasijrasikh's extraordinary leadership, and for the dedication of the @solaafghanistan and @SOLAxOnline teams to Afghan girls and their education. Afghan girls want to learn. They deserve every opportunity to do so. Thank you, @GlennGamboa, for telling this story and continuing to shine a light on their courage, determination, and right to an education. @APNews apnews.com/article/shabana-b…

“Five years is a long time in the life of a child.” For Afghan girls barred from school, those five years cannot simply be recovered. @rachelreid6 looks at how some continue learning & what is lost when alternative education has to take the place of school. bit.ly/46EI1Xv #Afghanistan #GirlsEducation

All of it, for Afghan girls. We won’t look away.
As August ends, I’m looking back at @solaafghanistan’s five years in #Rwanda – and looking ahead to the hope we’re building. Today I’m so happy to bring you to our new campus: our forever home for Afghan girls.

Five years ago today, the Taliban took over Afghanistan. In the days that followed, we moved our school community to Rwanda. So much has changed since then. But one thing has not: Afghan girls have refused to give up -- on themselves, on each other, or on the country they love so deeply. I see it in our girls at @solaafghanistan, who just moved into a new home in Rwanda built for their dreams. I see it in the tens of thousands of learners on @SOLAxOnline who continue to learn, one lesson at a time. They are the ones who keep the light burning. They give me hope. They keep us going. Five years is a long time. The world's attention moves on. But Afghan girls have not. Neither should we. Don't look away. "Out of the ashes, we rise." -- @sbasijrasikh
Five years ago today, Afghanistan fell into shadow. And for every day of the past five years, Afghan women and girls have been points of light in that darkness. These are my thoughts about the meaning of this day, and about the days to come. #DontLookAway

Today marks the beginning of Kwibuka 32. 32 years since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. As Rwandans know, but others may not, the word “Kwibuka” is a Kinyarwanda word. It means “To Remember.” @solaafghanistan arrived in Rwanda five years ago this summer. Our community was welcomed on the very night we landed, the very night we stepped off planes with only what we could carry on our backs. That welcome has never wavered. Not for a single day since that summer of 2021. We have put down roots here, and my appreciation and gratitude for Rwanda and the Rwandan people is unbreakable. We have found neighbors here. We have found friends. We have found a home. Remember. Unite. Renew.

Today, it begins. Today, I’m so happy to say: @solaafghanistan's 2026 admissions season is now open. You can find our application here: (forms.gle/1QukvedhyYrifLPW6). The application is available in English, Dari, and Pashto. The questions are the same in each version, and students and families should complete whichever version they’re most comfortable with. Only one application per student, please. We have also posted our admissions FAQ on our website where you will find information about our campus in Rwanda, our curriculum, and much more. As I’ve said previously, we can only accept applications from girls who are under the age of 18. If you are 18 and over, I absolutely encourage you to consider our @SOLAxOnline program. We enroll students of all ages, we have tens of thousands of Afghan students learning with us, and it’s entirely free. The final day to apply to SOLA is June 15. We will contact shortlisted students by the end of September. Join your Afghan sisters in Rwanda. This is your time now. SOLA is a home for Afghan girls, and we’re waiting for you.
