Every 90 minutes, someone in the UK or Ireland dies by suicide. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is not inevitable. You can interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. You could save a life. I've shared this video before; it's message remains as important and powerful as ever. You won't always know someone needs help so why not message that friend now and just check in?

Since its foundation in 1824 the bravery of Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers has saved more than 146,700 lives at sea. Hundreds of those volunteers have died attempting to save others. They are the best of us. Any person or organisation questioning their actions or loyalty to this country should be corrected and ostracised. Anyone can drown, but no one should. rnli.org/support-us

It is an outrage that the family income threshold where Eng students start to lose maintenance loan has been frozen at £25,000 since 2008, so its now not much more than a single earners min wage! If it'd risen with CPI inflation (never mind RPI or avg earnings) it'd be c£43,000
Each new school year brings your child closer to Uni age. If they do go, there’s a hidden parental contribution, often £1,000s a year. Most parents aren't warned to save in advance. Do listen to the FULL help in this week's Martin Lewis Podcast, & try the free calc (links below)

If you've left school this summer, you've probably got plenty to organise for what's next. 🎓🔧 But don't let that stop you from getting your second dose of the MenB vaccine. ✅ ⚠️ Two doses are needed for the best protection.

Suicide is highly contagious. It triggers copycat deaths across both time & space. Especially if reported sensationally. Please share these guidelines from the Samaritans on how to responsibly report on suicide. They apply also to social media. Young people are particularly vulnerable. RIP Jason Arday. You were failed by so many including the media. Please don’t let this awful awful tragedy lead to more tragedy. media.samaritans.org/documen…

It was a great pleasure to contribute to this Guardian “The Experts” piece on what death can teach us about how to live. I’m not sure anyone can ever truly be an expert on mortality, but here are my personal top 4 lessons, distilled from everything my patients have taught me as palliative care doctor: 1. Prioritise people, not things “As you approach the end of life, all the irrelevant stuff is stripped away. No one cares about how much power they had, how big their house is, how fancy their car is, how much status they had at work. What they care about is the people they love. The way to live a life that is rich and deeply fulfilling is to build human connections. That matters more than anything else.” 2. Don’t worry about signs of ageing “The wrinkles, grey hairs & menopausal body I now possess are all things that society wants us to feel distressed about - because they want to make money selling products to try to fix our distress. All of those stigmas associated with ageing are a blessing and a privilege to have. Anybody who is old enough to feel anxious about those things should be saying: ‘I am so lucky. I have lived long enough to creak when I get out of bed in the morning.’” 3. Connect with other living things “The richness of life comes from our relations with other living creatures, human & non-human. It could be animals or birds or plants, but it is living connections with the wider world that give life meaning. The more you can pour yourself into those connections, the more likely you are to have a deep sense of contentment & happiness.” 4. Try to stay healthy – but don’t let that limit your life “We try to stay healthy so we can function as well as we can for as long as we can. But ascetic lives are pretty hard and constrained. That is the opposite of life. Life is something to savour. So, don’t beat yourself up for things that are often construed as minor sins of living, like eating delicious food & drinking beautiful wine. We are sensual creatures & celebrating that is part of living life richly. Health means enjoying life, not just living it for as long as possible.”

Graduate premium has grown in most other countries as numbers going to uni have increased. UK declining graduate premium is unique, and likely linked to poor economic performance rather than "too many kids going to university". Critical piece of info as we think about HE policy, and says to me we need to focus on economic growth to provide valuable opportunities for grads, not knock the value of uni. Brilliant report from @jburnmurdoch in the @FT last week. @suttontrust

NEW: Women who graduate today could lose £80,000+ in pension wealth - because the student loan system was designed without any gender impact assessment. 57% of students are women. The 9% repayment deduction falls hardest on those who earn less, work part-time, and take career breaks. Our white paper explains why.
