The issue is that we aren't building for collaboration - we're just deciding that everything should be code, and therefore it's the developers responsibility. We were wrong. We need to build for the collaboration we want to see.

And to be absolutely clear, it had nothing to do with popularity causing servers to “melt” - the ultimate spin for any amateur media. We had more concurrent live streams for sports events 15+ years ago.

Farewell blue tick, old friend. Don't forget, always set your feed to 'Following' rather than 'For You'. Then you'll keep seeing the people you actually follow, and not people who've paid for attention.

My problem with this “open” research model is that these papers are not peer reviewed, but are being treated as if they are. The peer review process is a fundamental cornerstone of the scientific method. It is by no means perfect, but it’s not meaningless either.

Gestalt are patterns of human perception. Alexander's 15 properties are patterns of living structures that humans inhabit. Language are frozen patterns of human interaction. It should be no surprise that they are all similar.

I am really sad that now, at this pivotal moment when policymakers are finally discussing AI regulation in the mainstream, the discussion is centering the longtermist cult and other fringe sci-fi beliefs, rather than the many scholars who have worked on AI policy for years.

I want to dig in on why Red Hat is better at generating revenue from open source than anyone who has ever done it. This is a perfect example. Do you know how rare it is to generate $1B/ARR? Hashicorp is *half* that number. Let that sink in.

Boyd's OODA loop is probably the most valuable mental model I know of for reasoning about the increasing pace of change in the world. But - it's was formulated at a time before much of current complexity science. What's missing?

When faced with misogyny in the headlines teachers and parents always ask:
"How do I talk to the boys in my life about sexual violence?"
You don't. You don't start there. If you want to have an actual conversation that works, it has to begin somewhere else. 🧵

I said it last week but state machines are a lost art.
We make them all the time but in the worst ways & often not explicitly. Just by modelling a bunch of objects and events or vaguely connected micro services and lambdas.
Simplicity comes if you think in state machines IMO.

It honestly still blows my mind today that Santa isn’t Asian. I remember seeing him in the internment camps, and dude was def Japanese.

Most of us who work on heavily used systems at scale saw this one coming, and that they would propose a rewrite as they just have, and we also don’t think this is the answer.
This is why hubris is a very counterproductive quality in engineering.
Why do we all agree on this?

Hearing from multiple CEOs how Elon Musk has shifted the toolset/culture available to them:
- Treating employees like the worthless meatbag widgets they are
- Doing the literal basics on cutting costs
- A wake up call to do their fucking job as CEO
- Managing via polling

Feedback effects: Google initially relied on the (human-curated) link structure of the internet to derive "importance" signals from the internet graph. As people started using Google instead of links, Google accidentally destroyed the fabric that provided the value.

Breaking: people who believed radiologists and truck drivers will get replaced and Tesla will have a million robo-taxis by the end of 2020 now believe chatGPT and stable diffusion are going to replace writers and creators.
