Scottish. British. Permanently curious. History, forgotten stories, politics and everyday absurdities. A remarkable story every Saturday.

I’m fairly sure this wasn’t included in the safari safety briefing. 😂🦁

Mark Zuckerberg drinking Guinness looks like someone has asked AI to generate a video of a human enjoying a pint.

I stared at this for 10 minutes and nothing happened.

A couple of visitors to my garden pond earlier this year. The goldfinch busy collecting nesting material, while the blue tit appears to have had a rather more eventful morning. Endlessly entertaining little creatures.

There's a lighthouse off the French coast that's over 400 years old, has its own royal chapel and was built to impress kings. It's still working today. The remarkable story of Cordouan Lighthouse, my Saturday read. 👇

Extraordinary footage from Panama today. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck while a sports programme was being broadcast live. The presenters fled, but the camera kept rolling. Just look at the force of it. Thankfully, everyone in the studio was unharmed.

In 1959, the US Post Office experimented with delivering mail by cruise missile. A submarine fired a missile carrying 3,000 letters towards Florida. They arrived just 22 minutes later. Officials predicted missile mail would soon become commonplace. It was never tried again in the US.

Every time I watch a panda, I get the impression it's just making things up as it goes along. How they've managed to survive this long is beyond me. 🐼

It’s the fact somebody worked out that this would actually be fine is the remarkable thing. 😳

Edinburgh scientists built a “thinking robot” in the 1970s. Freddy could see objects, work out how to pick them up and even assemble a toy car. They taught it to tidy objects into a box. Freddy did as asked… then tried to tidy the box away too. AI, 50 years ago.

This looks like something from a science-fiction film. It’s actually a light pillar, an optical phenomenon caused by light reflecting off tiny ice crystals suspended in the air. Nature showing off again.

This looks computer generated, but it isn’t. This is the Qiantang River in China, where the incoming tide creates extraordinary waves that travel upstream. At certain points they collide and cross each other, creating these almost unbelievable patterns. Nature showing off again.

This is the River Ea in northern Spain. When the tide comes in, seawater pushes back up the river through the middle of the town. The town’s name? Ea. Fascinating little corner of the world.

HMS Otranto, carrying hundreds of American soldiers to war. On 6 October 1918, her journey ended on the rocks of Islay.

Is it just me or is there a bit of a pattern developing here? Announce an eye-catching policy, get the headlines, then the problems with cost, legalities or actually making it work start appearing afterwards. Ferguson Marine is just the latest one.

On St Kilda, Scotland, sheep still live almost completely wild. Soay sheep resemble breeds that existed thousands of years ago. They’re tiny, don’t flock like modern sheep and don’t even need shearing — they naturally shed their own wool. A little piece of the ancient world, still alive.

In 1945, a balloon bomb launched from Japan crossed the Pacific and landed in Oregon. Months later, a woman and five children found it during a picnic. It exploded, killing all six. They were the only known fatalities from enemy action in the continental US during WWII.

Scotland's 1974 World Cup squad contained a Ballon d'Or winner, a player who'd finished 3rd and another who finished 5th. There was also a 23-year-old Kenny Dalglish. They became the only unbeaten team at the World Cup. And went out in the group stage.

Paris, 1984. A German reporter explains how to cross Place de la Concorde. Walk at a steady pace. Don’t look at the drivers. If you look at them, they’ll assume you’re going to stop. I lived in France for 12 years. This may be the most useful piece of advice I never received. 😂

Scotland are STILL the only team to beat Spain in 90 minutes in a competitive game under Luis de la Fuente. Spain have won the Euros and Nations League in that time. We, meanwhile, have mainly concentrated on making life as difficult as possible for ourselves. 😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
