#sbukconf26 @SJMcDonn highlighting suicide & suicide bereavement in age 60+. Vulnerabilities can intensify due to social isolation, physical illness, functional decline, cumulative bereavement + loss, lack of support. Older adults are under-researched + under-serviced.
#sbukconf26 Dr Sharon McDonnell highlighted older adults bereaved by suicide & at risk of suicide: unheard, unseen, unspoken. A quarter of E&W population is age 60+. Stigma an issue, especially as period when suicide was still criminalised is within living memory for some.
#sbukconf26 Johnny Santer campaigns for the Multistorey Car Park Safety Bill, for better designed car parks, to reduce preventable deaths, including suicides. Increased 'edge perimeters', 24hr staffing + retrospective application are the targets of the bill.
Postvention=support + intervention after a suicide to help people + communities heal, to reduce further suicides. #sbukconf26 Nicole Cool spoke of the importance of postvention, some of it informally given, but need more funding for postvention to prevent future related suicides.
At the @SBUK11 Sui Bereavement conference #sbukconf26, Nicole Cool, an Australian postvention specialist, spoke on creating a compassionate postvention ecosystem: coverage, connection, capability, consistency + continuity. People only access help they're aware of + can afford.
The @SBUK11 Suicide Bereavement conference is always educational & sensitively handled. It is attended by a range NHS staff, 3rd sector/voluntary groups, academics, counsellors, people from emergency services, & many with lived experience #sbukconf26
Thanks to everyone who visited our @mashproject & @NCISH_UK stall at the ever informative @SBUK11 Suicide Bereavement conference this week in Liverpool #sbukconf26. Our infographic sheets are also available on our websites, alongside videos + links to our journal papers.
