mark said that there were quite a few stories behind the happiest lyrics! he talked about when he went to see the wicked musical in new york. the female lead sang a song called “i couldn’t be happier.” in the story she had finally reached the position she had always wanted. everyone envied her, everyone acknowledged her and she was at the highest position in society. but at that moment, she also had the opportunity to choose love. after giving it some thought, she ultimately decided to stay where she was and not choose love. she then sang the song with lyrics along the lines of, “i couldn’t be happier than i am right now. this is the greatest happiness i could possibly experience. im the happiest right now!” he explained that it was essentially a song about convincing herself that she was happy. he also said rather than being deeply moving, it was actually quietly sad.. he said that this was perhaps the first inspiration behind “happiest”
