If California's rents fell to the national average, its poverty rate would drop 30%, Pew finds. Rents absorbed 78% of CalFresh's $13.1B benefit growth since 1989.
Austin and Minneapolis saw rents fall about 20% after reforms, Pew says.

Unfunded affordable housing mandates are like responding to a famine by handing out lottery tickets paid for by taxing food production
Ruinously bad policy
Every policymakers knows or should know this. They do it to look good knowing it will have a negative impact

These NYC apartments are standing empty, not because the owners don't want to rent them, but because rent stabilization laws prohibit them from charging enough to earn back the costs of necessary repairs.
My latest for @WSJFreeEx

Guys, the in-lieu fee for Mountain View will be $118/sqft in FY27
This is just the in lieu and doesn’t cover
- planning
- building
- capacity
- public works
- transportation
- school
You can build at $100-115/sqft all day in Houston

A small infill developer shared their pro-forma with me.
Fees amount to *20%* of total project costs.
Mortgages for homebuyers will be be at least $1,212 / month more expensive.
If CA Democrats want to advance an affordability agenda, start by cutting housing fees.

Public safety is my number one priority. Crime is dropping across San Francisco, and technology is helping law enforcement solve crimes and keep people safe.
Today, we announced stronger privacy protections for automated license plate reader data—limiting how long data is available, tightening who can access it, and holding vendors to strict privacy and security standards. We are:
➡️ Cutting how long data is available from 12 months to 30 days
➡️ Requiring every active search to be tied to a specific incident number, with the reason for the search and the person conducting it recorded
➡️ Continuing to prohibit federal agencies from accessing San Francisco’s data, while approving state and local agencies individually
➡️ Prohibiting approved agencies from searching our data on behalf of agencies that are not approved
➡️ Prohibiting vendors from independently using or sharing San Francisco’s data
➡️ Conducting regular independent audits through the Department of Police Accountability
➡️ Pursuing stronger penalties at the state level for anyone who improperly accesses or discloses the data, in partnership with Assemblymember Haney and DA Jenkins
We can protect people’s privacy, keep San Franciscans safe, and strengthen the trust that has been critical to our public safety progress.

“Would you like to request voluntary departure, or should I issue a removal order?” The judge asked.
“I don’t know,” Angel, 13, replied before bursting into tears. He stared ahead stoically and continued to cry, eventually saying: “I have no one. I have nothing.”

Remember car break-ins?
San Francisco is on pace to end 2026 with a small fraction of what *used* to be our City’s most pervasive crime. Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) have been a game-changer in ending that.
Yet, incredibly, some activists want ALPRs gone… (1/2)

Big news! In the latest Berkeley/LA Times poll, we’ve surged ahead of Mayor Bass with an 11 point lead. This poll reflects the momentum we’re seeing on the ground. Angelenos are ready for change and want to see a City That Works.
But we can’t take our foot off the gas! A third of voters are undecided, and this race remains wide open. Now’s a great time to sign up to canvass, phonebook, or volunteer. See the link in bio to join us!

Mayor @DanielLurie, the gauntlet is thrown: "cities like Raleigh typically *finish* construction [of a housing project] before cities like San Francisco even approve it."
Check out this new work from a crack team of @Princeton and @UChicago economists ⤵️.
Where in America can new homes get permitted and built fastest? And are we getting faster or slower over time?
In a new paper with @leonardo_damico and Audrey Wang, we show cities like Raleigh typically *finish* construction before cities like San Francisco even approve it.
