Philly, thank you. For everything.
In 2015, you believed in me and traded for me, even as I struggled with performance and injuries.
In 2018, you graciously supported me as I dealt with my struggles off the field.

Extremely excited for this opportunity to give back to the guys coming behind me!
Since Wednesday, I've gotten another 42 applications for mentoring through my website (markappel.com/apply). So I've asked for help...
I'd like to introduce to you to 3 new mentors that want to give back:
Josh Green (@Joshtg22) is a pitcher currently playing for AAA Reno in the Diamondbacks organization. He is planning to spend his Friday mornings mentoring a few players while still playing minor league baseball.
Kier Meredith (@KierMeredith) is a current Red Sox outfield prospect playing for Hi-A Greenville Drive. Kier is setting up a schedule for Monday evenings to help high school and college athletes.
Brandon Gold (@bgold_3) is a former Colorado Rockies farmhand who played in AAA last year and pitched for Team Israel in the WBC this spring. He is making himself for a few hours every day (!!!) to meet with players.
These players have "been there." Getting mentored is an invaluable resource for high school and college kids looking to improve their performance. We know what it takes to get to the next level and are eager to help.
If you are a high school or college baseball player and need mentoring, fill out an application online (markappel.com/apply). We will respond within 48 hours.
Please share this tweet with any high school or college baseball player who might want to talk to a pro athlete. Injuries, setbacks, performance anxiety, relationships with coaches, college recruiting. Whatever it is, we've dealt with it.
As a reminder, we are offering this service on a tips only basis. We never expect payment, but I highly encourage adding a tip for these three guys. Buying them the equivalent of a coffee or a meal goes a long way.
Thanks everyone! Have a great weekend!

This is awesome and what using a platform to do good looks like👏
Two weeks ago, I started a mentorship program for high school, college and minor league baseball players.
A few takeaways:
1. Everyone needs a listening ear.
I had 50 signups in less than 24 hours and had to pause my application (it is now open again FYI). Kids are in need of adults who have "been there" and are willing to listen. Nothing more.
2. Everyone has a story.
The athletes I've met range from 16 to 23 years old. Each of them is working on (or dealing with) something. Develop a better pitch. Learn a new workout routine. Deal with injuries and setbacks. Managing anxiety in everyday life.
Every story is different. But every story is powerful. Listening––really listening––is a skill. I'm still developing it, but it has proven helpful so far.
3. Helping others helps yourself.
This isn't why I started this program. It has just been a wonderful side effect. Getting to know some of these athletes has been a joy. The future of this world is bright.
If you need mentoring:
- Fill out an application online (markappel.com/apply).
- I'll review and get back to you (via email).
- We will set up a Zoom call and talk (if accepted).
I am setting aside my Monday nights for the indefinite future to meet with high school, college and minor league baseball players while I am still in my rehab process from elbow surgery.
Additionally, if you are a current pro player that has some experience and want to also mentor younger players, send me a DM and we can talk. I think there are plenty of kids out there that would benefit from your wisdom.
Happy Wednesday everyone!

It's November 2021. I'm meeting my therapist Ben for the first time. I'm in a bind.
It has been 8 and a half long years of professional baseball. I haven't had a good season yet. I've had three surgeries. I've already retired and come out of retirement.
And through all this, I am still completely unsure whether any of this is worth it.
As we are finishing our session, Ben says something that catches me off guard:
"The degree to which you believe good things can happen is the degree to which our work will be effective. The more you believe, the more you will change. And the more you change, the better you will feel."
My initial reaction? Yeah, right...
Can it really be that simple?
The answer is yes.
It's just not what I think...

This one hit hard…
Mark Appel:
"I don't have any regrets. I know I showed up every day and gave the best that I could with whatever I had that day. And there were a lot of days where I didn't have a whole lot to give."

There are some hard realities of being a professional athlete. I struggled to figure it out for a while, but I've learned a lot!
Really enjoyed this convo with @DannyVietti
Take 2 minutes out of your day to listen to this from @markappel26:
"Somewhere along the line, baseball becomes this thing of 'Oh, I got to get a scholarship, I'm looking at pro ball...Now it's a business.' All of these things start weighing you down."

My pleasure, Kolten! Keep working and having faith. But above all, keep living with integrity!
Thank you so much to @markappel26 for taking the time to talk to me about baseball, life in general and the mental side of things. Truly one of the best conversations I have had & a one of a kind moment. Can’t wait to talk to you again, thank you for everything!

Brief personal update:
I had an arthroscopic procedure on my elbow back in April. Because of that, I am most likely done for the season.
Nonetheless, I am beyond blessed to have had the career I've had and I hope to have another opportunity to play again when I am healthy again!
I am sharing a much more thorough update in my newsletter tomorrow morning. Also, I am looking forward to sharing more consistently going forward.

Hope everyone is having a great summer. And a belated Happy 4th of July!
I've gotten tons of DMs from high school, college, and pro baseball players asking for help since I started writing this year.
Until now, I haven't been able to respond to many of them. But that is changing...
Today, I am starting to receive applications for my mentorship program. During recovery, I have more time on my hands and want to use that time to help others.
Here's how it works:
1. You apply (markappel.com/apply).
2. I'll respond.
3. If it's a fit, we will set up a call.
I'm doing this on a "Pay what you want" basis. But if you can't or don't want to pay, you won't be turned away.
Consider the application a more organized way for me to process DMs. Nobody but me will read them.
If you know someone who might benefit from this, please send them this tweet or the link above.
Hope everyone has a blessed Thursday!
It's been 3 hours since I sent this and I already have 13 applications. Really encouraging! I'll get back to everyone by tomorrow morning.
Keep them coming!
