we've seen how important student journalism can be with the reporting by the Cornell Daily Sun. but schools around the country regularly censor student journalists. (often illegally!) we have public records that show how this happens: 404media.co/how-schools-and-…

Mask up in #NYC, and cancel what you're doing to get your booster today. Kings County is raging with COVlD, per today's CDC update. PMC estimates 1 in 20 residents actively infectious, as of the most recent data on Sep 12. pmc19.com/map

Local news outlets in the Bronx are disappearing, shrinking, and often failing to pay their staff a living wage. On The Brian Lehrer Show, we talk to two stellar Bronx reporters about what we lose when we lose local news. (Produced by yours truly🎙️) wnyc.org/browse/shows/episod…

This is such a shame. Norwood News was such an essential news source for the community. The Mott Haven Herald and Hunts Point Express has been disinvested by CUNY. I am also the last reporter left at the Bronx Times. Besides us, the Riverdale Press, and News12, who’s covering us?

The WNYC series on Dolly was divine. The premise basically being that she was the last institution that everyone agreed to love. And the irony being that she was not universally beloved once upon a time. I would encourage those who haven't listened to it to do so radiolab.org/podcast/radiola…

NYC air quality has reached 'Very Unhealthy' levels (AQI 201+). At this level, everyone, not just sensitive groups, may experience serious health effects. What to do: ✅ Reschedule or move all unnecessary activities indoors ✅ All New Yorkers should avoid strenuous and prolonged (more than one hour) outdoor activities ✅ Keep windows closed when indoors ✅ If you use AC, close the fresh air intake so smoky air stays out ✅ If you have an air purifier, run it at the highest setting ✅ If you must be outside, a high-quality mask (N95/KN95) is recommended by health officials to reduce smoke exposure, but it's not a substitute for staying indoors ⚠️ Heat note: Very hot weather can be MORE dangerous than poor air quality. If you don't have AC, move to a cool indoor space, a library, a friend or family member's home, store, or another air-conditioned place. Listen to your body. If you have watery eyes, a scratchy throat, or difficulty breathing, reduce physical activity and go indoors. Some people are more sensitive to smoke and should avoid unnecessary outdoor activity: people with heart or respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD, people who are immunocompromised, older adults, people who are pregnant, and infants and children. 📞 Call 911 immediately if you or someone you are caring for has severe difficulty breathing or chest pain. If symptoms persist after air quality improves, contact a health care provider or seek urgent care. Most healthy people recover quickly from smoke exposure without long-term effects, but take precautions now. 📲 Track conditions: airnow.gov 🔔 Get alerts: sign up for @NotifyNYC ✅ More tips: nyc.gov/beready for Air Quality Events
Air Quality Health Advisory: Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 201-300. Very Unhealthy, and may cause health issues for everyone, especially sensitive groups. Info: weather.gov/okx/. Multilingual & ASL Link: on.nyc.gov/1m52k8v.

KN95 masks are available at public library branches across all five boroughs to protect the health of New Yorkers, especially those at greatest risk from wildfire smoke. Pick one up at:
📚 Brooklyn Public Library locations
📚 Queens Public Library locations
📚 St. George Library Center (Staten Island)
📚 Bronx Library Center (the Bronx)
📚 Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, NYPL's main branch (Manhattan) If you must be outside when air quality is poor, a well-fitting KN95 or N95 mask can reduce inhalation of fine particulate matter.

Instead of reading the latest long COVID pseudoscience making its rounds, might I suggest this facts-based and scientifically sound podcast ep where we talk research, biomarkers, and (again) science? 🤲
Why are RECOVER’s first round of #LongCOVID clinical trials failing? In this episode of Still Here, producer Melanie Marich talks to Betsy Ladyzhets about why NIH trial results have left many patients and advocates disappointed. 🎧 bit.ly/4uNNdTD
