our latest #MalariaCellAtlas paper is out in @ScienceMagazine today (see science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…) alongside a nice perspective showcasing the value of studying parasites before they become "zombies" (see science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…).
in this thread and this new manuscript, we present an exciting addition to the #MalariaCellAtlas, showcasing a high resolution view of asexual and sexual development of P. falciparum blood stages, as well as the first single cell transcriptomic profile of a natural infection 1/n

very proud of this work -- if you are into malaria or popgen or evolutionary biology or genomics, have a read. and congratulations to the whole team behind this progress to our understanding of malaria mosquito genomic diversity and population structure!
Preprint is out! We investigated the genomic diversity and evolutionary history of Anopheles funestus mosquitoes, one of the main species transmitting human malaria across Africa. Here’s a visual summary. Art by @petrathepostdoc . 1/8 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

NEW Sample Collection and Processing GUIDANCE, LIVE on our website now. Check out @marakat's thread --
pleased to share during #BG24 that the @EBPgenome Sample Collection and Processing subcommittee have updated our guidance on all things you need to think about when collecting and preparing specimens that will be used to generate high quality reference genomes (1/6)

we have also created a community brain dump for the miscellaneous findings we discover along the way that are not quite right for protocols but that might save someone somewhere a good deal of time either by providing a shortcut or (5/6)

For my malaria colleagues - we are trying to grow the GB4 (Ghana) parasite line and are seeing very large schizonts with merozoites that aren't able to egress. Has anyone seen/noted this before for this line?

just a few days left to apply -- @ArnauSebe and I would love to hear from postdocs who have been out of science for a year and would like to come back to science to work on the #BiodiversityCellAtlas -- more info on the Janet Thornton fellowship and available projects below
this year's @sangerinstitute Janet Thornton Fellowship scheme is now open -- this is for postdocs who have left science for 12 months for any reason and want to return -- read more about its history in the thread below, and find out about 8 projects here sanger.ac.uk/about/equality-…

Working on a very cool @darwintreelife assembly today. Haplotype resolved assembly of PENTAPLOID Rosa agrestis. They have asymetric meiosis with two chroms forming bivalents and the other three inherited as univalents through the egg. Spot the bivalent pairs in the HIC map.

Anopheles nili reference genome! NO COLD CHAIN! 🚫🧊This genome depended on samples that took a week to get from Cameroon to the UK and they were not shipped on ice -- the magic is light squishing in ethanol. One mosquito for DNA and one for Hi-C = scaffold N50 of 75 Mb 🧬🦟
