As per new guidelines promulgated this year, entities that have been named in a First Information Report (FIR) by the CBI or other central investigative agencies face a suspension of business dealings, with the Secretary of the department authorised to take action as soon as information on the issue is received.
As per the guidelines, the period of suspension could be six months, which can be extended by the Secretary concerned.
In case it is established that corrupt practices were undertaken by the company or a formal chargesheet is filed by CBI, the company will face stricter action of debarment by the defence ministry.
Defence Ministry is likely to suspend business dealings with pulp packaging to drones manufacturer SMPP after bribery charge.
Latest guidelines from April this year mandate suspension of business dealings if a company is named in a CBI FIR.
Initially for a period of 6 months, which can be extended.
More stringent provision of debarment will get triggered if chargesheet is filed.

SMPP corruption case:
The order of suspension of business dealings with the defence ministry can also be extended to all of the company’s allied firms.
In case the company’s joint ventures or consortiums are suspended, all partners may also be deemed to be suspended.

SMPP - the first defence company of its size caught in a corruption scandal in over a decade - is no stranger to controversies.
In 2019, ET brought out how it sourced key components and raw material for bullet proof jackets supplied to the Indian Army from China.

SMPP - originally a pulp packaging manufacturer- started in the defence sector as a provider of bullet proof systems but in recent years diversified into making loitering munitions and ammunition.
It also has a partnership with Rheinmetall’s South African entity, set up an ammunition plant in Himachal.
