We rock!!!
A special moment for me! 📚✨ This week, I had the honour of making my first presentation of our book, ‘Managing Your Boss: The Power of Upward Leadership’, at the #VU10thGrad. This book is about mastering the art of managing relationships at work, understanding leadership dynamics, communicating effectively with those above us, and building careers with wisdom, confidence, and purpose. We wrote it because success at work is not just about how well you do your job, but also how well you understand people, navigate power, and manage relationships. This is more than a book; it is a conversation every professional, young graduate, and aspiring leader needs to have. The journey of Managing Your Boss has officially begun! Thank you @ReachDrMuganga for co-authoring this book and giving me a moment on your stage! Salute you Bro! @managingboss #ManagingYourBoss #UpwardLeadership #CareerGrowth #Leadership #AuthorLife

Your loan just got heavier: What BoU’s rate hike means for you @BOU_Official yesterday raised its Central Bank Rate by 2.25 percentage points, from 9.75 percent to 12 percent. It is the highest level since 2017, and the effects will soon reach borrowers’ pockets. The decision came at an extraordinary meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee. The central bank is trying to stop the slide of the shilling, which has lost about 12 percent against the dollar this year, and to contain inflation driven by high global oil prices. Take a Kikuubo hardware trader with a Shs50 million, five-year loan used to stock cement and iron bars. If her bank passes on the full increase, raising her rate from 18 to 20.25 percent, her monthly repayment climbs from about Shs1.27 million to Shs1.33 million. That is Shs62,000 more every month, roughly the cost of a bag of cement and a jerrycan of fuel. Over the life of the loan, she will pay about Shs3.7 million more. She also pays more on the other side of her business. The iron bars she imports are priced in dollars, so the weaker shilling makes each consignment costlier. She now has two choices: raise prices for customers who are already tightening their belts, or accept thinner profits. For salaried workers, the pinch may come through salary loans, mortgages and overdrafts on variable rates. A teacher who planned to borrow to finish building her house may find the bank’s offer less friendly than it was last month. Anyone thinking of taking a new loan should expect stricter terms. The news is not all bad. Savers could earn more on fixed deposits and Treasury bills as returns rise. People who have been disciplined about saving may finally see their money work harder. Businesses were already holding back. A recent Bank of Uganda survey found that only 8.8 percent of firms applied for loans in the three months to September, half the share of the previous quarter. The central bank has also cut its growth forecast for 2026/27 to between 6 and 6.5 percent. Commercial lending rates, already at 17 to 19 percent, are expected to rise in the coming weeks. What borrowers should do now •Ask your bank whether your loan has a fixed or variable rate, and when any change will take effect. •Avoid dollar loans unless you earn in dollars. •Postpone expansion plans that are not urgent. •Chase customers who owe you money, and keep some cash in hand. The central bank says it stands ready to act again if inflation pressures persist. For now, the cost of money has gone up, and every borrower will feel it.

LAW 11 — Managing Your Boss 100 Laws of Getting to the Top Manipulation conceals its intent. Genuine influence operates openly. In the workplace, there is a major difference between manipulating your boss and genuinely influencing your boss. Manipulation is built around hidden motives—trying to control decisions, people, or outcomes without being transparent about what you really want. It may produce short-term results, but it eventually erodes trust. Genuine influence works differently. It is earned through competence, consistency, honesty, strategic communication, and the value you bring to your organization. If you want to rise, don’t spend your energy trying to outsmart your boss. Learn to understand your boss’s priorities, anticipate challenges, bring solutions, communicate professionally, and consistently make your contribution visible. Your goal should be to become the person your boss can trust, depend on, listen to, and confidently recommend. The most powerful professional influence is not about forcing people to do what you want. It is about building enough credibility that your ideas are respected and your contribution is recognized. Manipulation asks: “How can I get my boss to do what I want?” Genuine influence asks: “How can I create value, earn trust, and position myself as someone worth listening to?” That distinction can transform your career. Don’t manipulate your way to the top. Build your way there. 📖 Managing Your Boss — 100 Laws of Getting to the Top Conan D. Businge | Lawrence Muganga (Ph.D.) @managingboss @somaaiacademy

LAW 06 — “The decision is usually made before the meeting.” From my book Managing Your Boss, part of the 100 Laws of Getting to the Top series. The meeting is often where decisions are confirmed—not made. Influence happens beforehand: build trust, pre-brief key decision-makers, understand the room, address objections early, and build alignment quietly. If you wait for the meeting to make your case, you may already be too late. Real influence often happens before the meeting begins. @managingboss #ManagingYourBoss #100LawsOfGettingToTheTop #Leadership #CareerGrowth #Influence

LAW 07 | Managing Your Boss Your argument is only as strong as your relationship with the person hearing it. Being right is not enough. Influence depends on trust, timing, emotional intelligence and your ability to read the power in the room. The goal is not to win every argument, but to communicate in a way that makes your message heard and respected. Strong relationships turn good arguments into influence. @managingboss @ReachDrMuganga @unischsguide1 @VUKampala

LAW 08 — MORAL POWER SURVIVES EVERY RESTRUCTURING “Organisations may restructure, departments may merge, leaders may change, and positions may come and go—but the moral power you build through integrity, competence, fairness and trust cannot easily be restructured away. Titles give you authority for a season; character gives you influence for a lifetime.” This is one of the powerful lessons in Managing Your Boss: 100 Laws of Getting to the Top. In every workplace, circumstances change. The boss you work with today may not be there tomorrow. The structure that gives you influence today may be redesigned tomorrow. Your title may change, your department may be moved, and the people around you may be different. But there is one form of power that survives these changes: the reputation you have built and the trust you have earned. Managing Your Boss challenges professionals to look beyond positional power and learn how to build lasting influence—through character, emotional intelligence, professionalism, performance and the ability to work effectively with those above, beside and below them. Because when the structure changes, your character remains. When the title disappears, your reputation speaks. And when power shifts, the trust you have built can still open doors. That is the power of moral authority. That is Law 08. @ReachDrMuganga @cbusinge @managingboss @somaaiacademy

Power is a system, not a person. A boss may occupy the highest seat, but real influence comes from understanding the people, relationships, processes, culture and decisions that shape an organisation.

Are you on the right side? Over 85 million jobs will be replaced by AI by 2030 (WEF). The question isn’t whether your industry will change — it’s whether your degree prepared you for it. At Victoria University, we don’t just teach what exists. We build what’s next. A total 170 million new jobs will emerge this decade. Over 92 million will disappear. Which side will YOU be on?
