One thing I have never understood are social medias, especially the need to display your life. All I see on instagram, BeReal and other platforms are people that I feel, are competing on who has the better lifestyle. I believe that the ever increasing needs to share has transformed humans, into social animals — if I may borrow Aristotle’s words. I find this particularly concerning; ranking can be very toxic. What’s even more interesting is that I’ve noticed most kinship groups (followers) present the same lifestyle capacities, with usually the exception of 10% of their feed. Those 10%, often influencers or socially deemed higher individuals, unconsciously force the user to post ever more streamlined/normalised content to show you’re **marvelous** lifestyle. The problem with this is that 1) users feel the need to post only the best of their life leaving them with nothing else 2) it creates more social pressure for others to do the same 3) users sacrifice the experience they could have to the possibility of saying that they were there! TBH I was never a big fan of showing off or just keeping random strangers up to date with what I did. It is my life and the moments I lived could be told. So years back I switched all my accounts to private but even so, in my closest group of peers I did not share anything (with some rare exeptions). The introduction of private content with restricted stories also was never for me. Broadly sharing an experience through a screen is, to me, impossible. You may think I must be a great storyteller; I am not. I have never felt the need to, on my own, disperse bits of my life even to my closest friends. Enthoven puts this nicely, filming or taking pictures is a way to keep the world at distance and also creates the ability to forget since the content will be stored somewhere. This means actively denying the present. You probably have in life people telling you all about the benefits of sophrology, yoga, pilates etc. which are all practices that are supposed to bring you closer with yourself. Yet all these people love to take pictures showing at the same time that they are far from the evil they want to escape. In a way one could argue that this is what we’re al l doing on CT, posting and displaying our life. The difference to me here is that the particular role is different here, I do not wish for it to be a competition for status, rather a medium for education. You may think of me as a old man that is outmoded, out of touch with today’s society. Remember in the collective consciousness we are sometimes endowed with a particular knowledge, a way of seeing which has not yet been altered by these modern tools and which therefore sometimes can have the right idea. “Quand je danse, je danse et quand je dors, je dors.” Montaigne I am all by my self when I act. This is exactly what you’re NOT doing when you’re taking a video or pictures to then post. It’s harder in life to live the moment then to film yourself living the moment The argument at this point, I feel has a bit widened but my thoughts remain the same; why film when you can be in the moment? Why post when you can’t relive it? Live YOUR life.
