They reach the exit soon enough, and Ren looks over to her with a soft, lazy grin. He gestures to the clearing with a nudge of his head, hand briefly squeezing hers. “Lead the way.”

So he guides Kanako as they weave through the crowd and the heartbeat of the party, the booming beat now a buzzed hum, faint enough that he now could hear the measured beats in his chest.

Tonight, he seeks out Kana’s hand simply because he wants to hold it. Like it knows no other home. Like logic never mattered in the face of how it felt, how he feels for her.

Past Ren would’ve given logical excuses as to why he’s done the latter; the throng of people too rowdy, it’d cause them to separate, be distanced ( when in fact all he wanted was for her to stay close enough to be within arms reach ).

“Sure,” came his reply. Easy, like the pull of air into lungs, the pull of tide to shore, the pull of Ren’s fingers to Kanako’s.

Should he have alcohol to thank? A fleeting curiosity mellowed out as he tunes into what she was asking while trying to will his gaze to focus on meeting hers without defaulting to mapping her face, committing it to his warmest memories.

The past Ren would’ve chuckled at the thought of being able to see Kana so carefree, so comfortable in simply * being, rather than her more usual, endearingly flustered demeanor.

For a time, it took a while to get her to drop his full name; as if the barriers were intact and the distance was made clear. It took a bit of convincing and a couple of tries, but he wouldn’t have done it any other way.

And then she calls him by his name. Naturally, as if the sound of it was made to be formed by her lips.

Nursing a drink in his hand, the eldest Zhào had been content spending time with the volleyball player all night, making sure to keep an eye on her should she go overboard.

With the amount of times he’s had the luxury to attend, Ren could tell for certain that the party he and Kanako were at was soon reaching its end.
