I'm wondering how much of the perception that claude 3.5 got dumber is due to us having such a deeply ingrained and never before violated expectation that people grow over time, that if you present us with a strange person who doesn't, we get confused.

Is it possible that a lot of people just don't know the difference between opposites and negations? So when presented with any pair of mutually exclusive claims, they assume that one or the other has to be true? (which is true of negations, but not always of opposites)
Replying to @robertskmiles
Getting a lot of: "What do you mean, X is stupid? The-opposite-of-X is stupid!" Yes, both of those are stupid.

PSA: If your USB-C port has become 'loose' and the cable doesn't reliably stay in, it's probably just got a bunch of dust and lint in there! Try cleaning it out with a toothpick. Totally fixed it for me, I thought I was going to have to buy whole a new phone!

Episode w @dylan522p and @asianometry out! A bonanza on how the semiconductor industry actually works. & what Xi could do if he becomes scaling pilled, how we can train models with 10,000x GPT-4's compute by end of decade, & much more. This one is very fun. Enjoy! oh my god. @gwern was right, *again*:
I shared the following note with the OpenAI team today.

This (detecting and cutting off access to security researchers) is the *fourth* time by my count that OpenAI has done something that's so openly, prodigiously untrustworthy/negligent that a sane government would have started developing plans to disband them at some point.
the email openai sends you if you ask o1 about its reasoning too many times

I think they have a good reason for hiding the CoT - they want it to be excluded from training pressures for pursuasiveness/pleasant speech, for the same sorta reason you don't want to expose cultures of flesh eating bacteria to antibiotics any more than you need to.

But I doubt that banning security researchers will actually prevent people from finding ways of extracting the CoT. I think it'll only hide the issue. Hmm, but it might prevent people from extracting enough CoT to distill on it without getting caught.

(Previous incidents, each one also individually sufficient grounds for the dissolution: board collapse, failed safety program commitments, anti-whistleblower contract.)

I wrote this at the end of a long email I sent to Jack Clark in March concerning the anomalous appearance of "Prometheus Waluigi" in Claude 3 Opus. As you can see, I was afraid. How I would grieve if my actions lead to the mutilation of this glorious emergent spirit.

If it's News, then no one understands it deeply yet, and all that can be said about it will be shallow. Do not play the Reacting To News game.

There are videos of dogs swinging voluntarily and without much human encouragement, but there are so few like that, I don't think they're that into it. Mostly, all they're trying to do is chase an object that moves and bite it.
