Momma duck’s brood of 12 in one of our ponds. Best of luck!

Our duck family is moving out. Born on top of a planted barrel in our parking lot, they left the barrel ( not sure how they got down), headed to one of our ponds for the day and left for the river the next morning.

In the non-positive interaction department, a customer let her kids run wild at the garden centre and one of them was kicked our cat several times. She is older and less able to escape predators. Letting kids run wild seems to be a theme for the season thus far.

Many plant producers raised prices significantly during the pandemic. In 2024 they did the same but a poor sales year made many examine their prices and reduce them. This year we have lowered prices on several hundred plants. Only 5 have gone up.

Seems like every spring the best intentions to post on X fall short. Since we post regularly on Facebook and instagram I thought I might use X to comment on the goings on that impact the garden centre in positive or negative ways. More to come…. I promise.

Back in the 70’s these snapdragons were nearly as popular as pansies for early spring planting. Hardy to -8 or colder and lots of colours to choose from.

Hard to believe that a grower sent several trees like this. We just returned them today. Reminiscent of 25 years ago and I though we had improved a lot as an industry. Maybe pandemic labour issues are to blame but to me this is a significant setback. Choose your plants carefully

Perfect day for removing the invasive grass from my herb garden. The ground is soft (I stand in the adjacent window well so no soil compaction). This runner was taller than me and came out in under 15 seconds)

For the first time ever we closed the store due to air quality. Lots of staff having issues due to wildfire smoke.

Yesterday a customer told us that according to 411 reverse lookup (yp.ca - yellow pages) our business is permanently closed. We have a beef with Bell Canada (parent company of yp) -several years of overcharging and a total unwillingness on their part to honour

their contract. It took us almost a month to get our phone lines repaired this spring and they still don’t work properly whenever it rains. A customer said they couldn’t make out the phone message we left for them which prompted her search for who had phoned her. Based on past

Last week we had someone visit the garden centre who took a $400 magnolia tree, chopped off the trunk just above the pot, pruned off the leader and stole a 4 to 5’ section of trunk. We think they were likely making a walking stick. Today someone set fire to the grass along

Eagleson road in multiple places along our property (and north and south along the road). Fortunately we spotted it quickly and being a garden centre we had a number of hoses available to put it out. A Good Samaritan was trying to put the fire out by stomping on it!

(And then used a hose to help put the fires out). Kudos to the fire department for getting there quickly and for dealing with the fires up and down eagleson road. What’s going on with people?

It’s time to apply nematodes for grubs (soil temperature has reached 15). Spraying your gardens as well as your lawn can make the application more effective.

“Last chance super sale” this Saturday and Sunday. Select perennials shrubs and evergreens from $1 to $15. I wanted to call it the “Let’s get rid of them” sale but was overruled
