🧵Irvin D. Yalom’s *The Gift of Therapy* is an invaluable resource to any aspiring therapist. It contains 85 "suggestions," to use his terminology, to guide and inspire future psychotherapists. For my own benefit (and maybe yours too?), I thought I would summarize them here. 1/

Therapist: She just want me to give her love & support Supervisor: But if she were capable of receiving love & support she wouldn't be coming to you for them. That's her real problem & until it's treated, she won't be able to take anyone's advice & that's why she needs therapy👇

I've been looking for something like this and imagine i'm not alone. Recommended readings from @JonathanShedler
1/ People often ask what readings I recommend for clinicians & trainees who want to learn about psychodynamic therapy. Here's a partial list For a bird's eye, jargon-free introduction to psychodynamic thought, read chapters 1 and 2 of "That Was Then, This is Now" by yours truly.

We face a choice: between net zero, and the huge economic benefits that delivering on the energy transition will bring, or not zero, and the costs of subsiding the finite industries of the past that no one sensibly wishes to invest in. There is no choice. theguardian.com/environment/…

I'm shocked by the normalisation of this- 1,361 (13% above expectations) excess deaths in a wk should get more attention. We've seen excess deaths continuously through 2nd half of 2022 & now again. About Half explained by acute COVID. Why isn't govt investigating & responding?
ONS deaths data has been released for week ending 24 Mar. 1,361 more deaths were recorded in-week compared to the 5-year average. That’s 13% more, a higher excess than seen in recent weeks. Year-to-date there have been 160,016 deaths recorded, 7% more than the 5-year average.

Very clear and helpful
1/ Sixteen psychoanalytic concepts for our time (updated) 🧵 Splitting: Perceiving others in black-and-white categories; seeing them as one-dimensional, as all good or all bad

Chp35: On Being Helped by Your Patient. Being helped by a client isn’t wrong or uncommon. Client’s self-esteem can be boosted by being able to be supportive to their therapist. Another example of the power and benefits of genuine, human connections. 36/

Chp36: Encourage Patient Self-Disclosure. Self-disclosure is critical for effective therapy. Therapists should focus both on the content of the disclosure, what is shared, and the process of the disclosure, e.g. why was X disclosed today? How difficult was sharing Y? 37/

Writer's block and self-doubt: it’s okay: Feeling self-doubt is normal when you're doing something challenging. Instead of letting it stop you from moving forward, figure out what you need to feel supported and able to continue. #writerslife #writersblock markusahlberg.com/post/write…

#TherapistTwitter, what advice would you give someone about to attend their first therapy session? Some things that come to my mind include: 1. Dare to share, and if you don't want to talk about something... that's probably what you should talk about (1/2)

2. Dare to change, you know what's right for you. If the therapist doesn't feel right for you, try someone else. 3. Take your time, therapy takes time and can feel slow at times but dare to continue., the rewards are immense. (2/2) #therapy #mentalhealth
