One year ago today, Missouri executed Lance Shockley despite serious doubts about his guilt. In prison, Lance was a leader, peacemaker, a minister. His life reflected the possibility of redemption. Missouri refused to recognize it.
We send our love to all who loved Lance.
The last few weeks have been particularly intense for our movement. This #WorldDayAgainstTheDeathPenalty we wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge recent proposals from the federal government to carry out the first public executions in nearly a century.
The last one was carried out right here in Missouri in 1937.
Will it help our movement? Will it hurt our movement? No one is quite sure, but it's a shocking proposal nonetheless.

"In yet another outrage related to capital punishment in the United States, this time in Tennessee, prison officials have failed in their attempts to execute a prisoner. The execution process for Tony Carruthers was halted ("for now") with much blood and pain reported after a failed attempt to perform a cutdown to access a vein. Issues of due process and untested DNA evidence with could prove innocence in this case not withstanding, government cannot be trusted with the power to kill prisoners, and they certainly cannot be trusted to get it right, every time. It is well past time to abolish the death penalty."
