In 1997, 26-year-old Curtis Flowers was wrongfully convicted of murder.
Six trials — deliberated by nearly all white juries — four death sentences, and 23 years in prison, all for a crime Curtis never committed. He was eventually exonerated in 2020, and remained a powerful voice against racial bias in the criminal legal system.
Curtis passed away last week at his home in Mississippi. His story serves as a stark reminder that the fight for criminal and racial justice reform remains as urgent as ever.
