There is at least one sunflower sea star in California! Watch the video to see it causing an 'urchin stampede'! it also looks like it has an urchin or two in it's stomach - see the lumps!? This is such a big deal! #helpthekelp #sunflowerseastar @Conserve_CA @oregonkelp

Our amazing @PiscoScience field team has surveyed ochre stars at 5 Oregon sites this week, and I’m happy to say there are about a ‘metric butt ton’ (official SI unit) out there! We’re on the road to a robust recovery from sea star wasting! @mad_abbott @BrennaRothman @meggafauna

Here, #intern Miranda Andersen illustrates one of @SERCinvasions' creative hacks. When preserving marine organisms on settlement plates in the field, they wrap them in pantyhose & soak them in ethanol. Pantyhose are ideal wrappers: Ethanol can get in, but critters can’t get out.

Kea is a wonderful artist and a wonderful human! She was one of the students in the Bamfield bus accident and is now having a hard time tidepooling & exploring because of lasting impacts. Help her get an all-terrain wheelchair so she can go find (& illustrate!) more nudis! 💙
Hello! My name is Kea, the artist behind Squiddllr. I am working to raise funds so that I can get an all terrain wheelchair. I have more details in my GoFundMe. gofund.me/ef9335c1 If you can support me by donating or sharing that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 💕

.@sandraemry has been studying the impact of heat waves on rockweed. On June 28, her thermal-imaging camera showed the temperature nearing 125°. Over the course of a four-day heat wave, dense beds of rockweed died. “The stench was awful." theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv… @ZoologyUBC

Still processing my first run in with the police... I've been doing a lot of cicada interviews & with national news outlets contacting me, I thought I should have some live ones onhand. So I was delighted when my cousin called panicking about the "swarm" on the side of her home.

Pertusaria pertusa looking just like the Kodama from Princess Mononoke; both the lichen and the spirits are signs of a healthy forest.

Shifting back to #GrumpyCrab theme for #Crustmas day 18: the rough shellback crab, Hypochoncha parasitica. I guess this would be my expression too if I had to lug a mollusc shell Atlas-like with me everywhere. Seriously, tho, these crabs are adorable. #25DaysofCrustmas #1001jars

Here's that parasitic crustacean again with another photo showing it inside a dissected sea-star host. Image from here: zenodo.org/record/3751654#.X…

Groundbreaking study from @OregonState, @Conserve_CA, @HakaiInstitute and over 66 partner institutions finds the sunflower sea star to be Critically Endangered by the @IUCNREDList
A decade ago, spotting sunflower sea stars off the Pacific coast of North America was no surprise. Then came the sea star epidemic. 🎥 by @HakaiInstitute with @OregonState @nature_org @KatPyne @joshsilberg @grant_callegari hakaimagazine.com/videos-vis…

Happy #SeaSlugDay! I will never get over the fact that these cute floppy hooded nudibranchs smell exactly like watermelon jolly ranchers.

An isopod parasitizing a rhizocephalan that is parastizing a hermit crab. An example of hyperparasitism!
