It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Attacks on hospitals are robbing vulnerable newborns of the neonatal intensive care they need.

This is a strong, principled speech and I’m totally unclear why it couldn’t have been delivered 6 or 9 or even 12 months ago, and why 18 Senate Democrats couldn’t find the courage to do the right thing until after the Trump restoration became certain and imminent.

Gaetz withdrawal encouraging, not just because we won't have AG Gaetz but because it's taken Trump about 2 weeks to squander his supposedly invincible mandate and remind everyone of his staggering incompetence and dysfunction—which, per last time, are the main checks on his power

Lots of issues go into people’s votes, but the bar is pretty high to make the case anything besides “I didn’t like the economy and I remember liking it under Trump” is the main one based on the data so far
First (of several) @NavigatorSurvey “what happened” reports is out. The core dynamic: Trump won the 15% of swing voters by 8 points, who disapproved of Biden presidency, said inflation was the top issue, and had far more positive views of Trump’s presidency than Trump the person.

This bill from the NCGOP strips voters’ ability to choose who performs the duties and responsibilities of elected statewide offices in North Carolina.
Instead, Republican insiders only empower offices who have Republican lapdogs! This spits in the face of voters. #ncpol

My big picture point here: We tested and ran, at scale, ads on the economy and costs. They had policy specifics, and were fairly populist in tone.
Other people can debate if they like them, or if it was the right move. But we definitely ran them.

I think people making this argument should state explicitly what positions they think are permissible to take on immigration to "win" beyond the ones that Harris already took during this campaign.

Could not agree more with @AJentleson here:
“In politics, winning elections is the moral imperative. You go into this business to change people’s lives for the better. That means changing policy, and to change policy you have to win.
Those who would rather lose elections so that they can feel better about themselves leave the real suffering to the people they claim to fight for. No one wins when we lose. It is time to start winning again.”

I’m Muslim. If somebody tried to bring the Quran into my children’s public schools, I would fiercely oppose it. Not only out of respect for other people’s faiths (or lack thereof) but also because making religion a political instrument corrupts faith

“Dems are losing because they used the word ‘uplift’” is beyond parody. You’re complaining about a rhetorical tic that annoys you personally. It doesn’t have sweeping electoral implications. This is utter foolishness and you sound like an idiot
NEW: Dems must drop their tendency for campus affinity groups and lingo. It's alienating to many - and not just the MAGA crowd.
Yes, "latinx" but also "uplift," center as a verb and more.
