Latest MAGA mental gymnastics is accusing Powell of making policy decisions based solely on not liking Trump
They just need a scapegoat
Fact of the matter is Fed follows the 2y, they’ve done this for decades, they did it during Trump 1.0, Biden, and they’ll do it for Trump 2.0

If the US enters a recession, long-term interest rates are likely to go down, and it would be cheaper for the US government to refinance existing government debt.
However, the chart below shows that the interest payments saved if interest rates decline by two percentage points would be more than offset by the deterioration in government finances associated with a recession.
Specifically, if interest rates decline by two percentage points, the US government would save around $500 billion in annual interest payments. But if the US enters a recession, the government will have lower tax collections and pay more in unemployment benefits, and the historical deepening of the budget deficit during recessions of around 4% of GDP would correspond to an additional $1.3 trillion erosion of US government finances measured in 2025 dollars.
The bottom line is that it is not possible to improve the budget deficit by creating a recession because during a recession government finances would deteriorate by double the amount saved in interest payments. -Apollo

With DXY down, 10y UST yields up, stocks down, gold surging again, wanted to re-highlight this interview with @natbrunell from a week ago Monday (March 31, two days before Trump's tariff announcement), in which we said the following:

NO STRIKES, NO WARNINGS
At this rate I’ll be completely removed from YouTube by the end of the day
@YouTube how can you possibly justify this?

Remember.... this assumes this tariff rate holds.
We are one Truth Social post away from having to change this again.

Like Covid, free trade didn’t wreck small towns, government policy did.
You win against manufacturing in a centrally planned economy (China) with more free market capitalism, not with more central planning.

One day @garyseconomics will wake up and realise that despite his good intentions he made everything worse for the very people he wants to help.
Being a good mathematician or trader doesn’t mean you’re a good policymaker, no matter how much your clickbait false-hope messaging appeals to desperate people.
I could be wrong.
I continue to consider the possibility that he is right and I just don’t understand yet, but I still haven’t seen or heard the explanation of how his idea actually helps people avoid poverty.
The open invitation for him to discuss with me and change my mind remains.
Ideally I’d like the debate to be with myself, @sashayanshin and @alexgroundwater too because we all share a desire to see working people be better off, as successive governments continue to make everyone worse off.

“You see, at first, when someone says, 'Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,' it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works – but only for a short time. What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition. So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs.”

How much paper silver was shorted today to keep it flat? How many millions of ounces? And why would you short silver today, when gold just broke out on Friday? It makes no sense. Silver is 50% from its ATH and is a rubberband ready to explode. Seems fishy to me. 🧐
