Winning at all costs is an easy excuse, but it does not absolve us of responsibility for the ugly political landscape before us. My full piece below:
Both political parties have lost the plot. The party apparatuses, the donors, and, yes, the operatives, seem to have forgotten why we got into campaigns and electing candidates in the first place.
Political strategist Maria Comella writes about the implosion of Graham Platner’s campaign and the political system that most values winning—no matter how much our moral principles are compromised to get there. vanityfair.visitlink.me/6xrL…
Years in the making @Timodc. I wasn’t disappointed, and we finally got to yes.
Today’s @BulwarkOnline daily is a doozy. First @macnyc on the clownish retribution agenda, Bridgegate lessons, 2028 hot stove, and how she rejected me when i was in the closet.
Then the Trio on Candace as lez @samstein @willsommer. Buckle up.

“"Jules, this is Brian. Listen, I'm on an airplane that's been hijacked. If things don't go well, and it's not looking good, I just want you to know I absolutely love you. I want you to do good, go have good times. Same to my parents and everybody, and I just totally love you, and I'll see you when you get there," Sweeney said”

I’m not sure what possessed me to write about my dad, who’s now been dead a much greater part of my life than alive. This piece forced me to admit that his death was the worst event of my life, but also the catalyst for everything that came after.

Both parties should just do away with the response to the sotu. Makes no sense. Disconnected from the moment. A loser for anyone who does it.

There’s such a thing as true schmaltz, and it’s unendurable. But then there are sincerities so tender and true that C.S. Lewis says we “take our revenge” on them by calling them names like “sentimentalism” and “naïveté.” People do this to It’s A Wonderful Life not because it’s too saccharine but because it’s too profound. It touches deeper, where we hurt more, than we care to admit.

‘We shed as we pick up, like travellers who must carry everything in their arms, and what we let fall will be picked up by those behind. The procession is very long and life is very short. We die on the march. But there is nothing outside the march so nothing can be lost to it.’

RIP the legendary Tom Stoppard. Among his more famous achievements, he radically rewrote Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (under the pen-name Barry Watson), adding most of the thrilling beats and hilarious gags.
One of my favourites: the cut to Brody, after being hyped up as a master of spycraft, lost and blithering in a Turkish market.

May your memory be a blessing, Arco. We spent a lot of time in a half-dozen or so states following the governor around…and you would’ve definitely texted me about this tweet. You were mensch & a true journalist.
And I miss that smile.
Matt Arco was a first class reporter & an even better person. We got to know each other well over the last 15 years & I came to admire him & enjoy the time we spent together. His passing is a tragedy & I will truly miss him. My condolences to his family. nj.com/politics/2025/05/long…

Absolutely devastating news. I’m heartbroken. He was as good as he was kind. I’ll miss him giving me a hard time for my poorly timed facial expressions.

I feel the same way. I was lucky to know such a wise, kind and incredible person.
Before I ever met Ted Olson, I was indebted to him for his pivotal role in marriage equality. Then I was lucky enough to get to know him.
Brilliant. Honorable. But also funny and fun and just so full of life. I am so sad to hear of his passing.
