Yesterday saw the final tea party at Maidwell Hall - the setting for my boarding school memoir, ‘A Very Private School’ - as it is set to close. One of my contemporaries was persuaded to attend this finale by his sons, who hoped it would provide closure for his suffering there in the ‘70s. This man wrote to me, last night, of how physically the school had changed, but: “Overall it felt like meeting a sinister old Aunt who decided to have cosmetic surgery at the age of 90. Nothing can quite cover up the past.”
