MacArthur Foundation names William Tarpeh a MacArthur fellow
Tarpeh, an assistant professor of chemical engineering @Stanford, has received a 2025 MacArthur Fellowship recognizing his development of energy-efficient methods for recovering valuable molecules from wastewater. The fellowship provides $800,000 over five years.
Tarpeh designs devices and membranes that sort molecules from waste mixtures based on their chemical properties. His projects include recovering ammonia from wastewater – where it's a pollutant – for use as fertilizer and extracting lithium from spent batteries for reuse.
@MacFound announced 22 fellows for 2025 across science and art disciplines, selecting individuals for creativity and potential for significant future contributions. Tarpeh is also a fellow with Stanford's Precourt Institute for Energy and the @StanfordWoods Institute for the Environment.
