In May 1920 the San Remo conference granted Britain the Mandate for Palestine under the Covenant of the League of Nations. The intention was to govern these former Ottoman territories ‘until such time as they are able to stand alone’. Instead the British laid the foundations for the State of Israel in a country that had been until that point 90% Muslim & Christian Palestinian. By 1949, 85% of those Palestinians were homeless, stateless refugees.

Hamas said the mass storming of the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron by hundreds of Israeli settlers under the pretext of the Sukkot holiday, accompanied by extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and several rabbis, marks a further escalation in the occupation's assault on Islamic holy sites.
Hamas official Abdul Rahman Shadid said the raid, coupled with the military siege imposed on Hebron, "will not break the will of our steadfast people," adding that the ongoing incursions "will be fuel for growing popular anger" and that the Ibrahimi Mosque "will remain true to its Islamic and historical identity."
He called on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, particularly in Hebron, as well as the wider Arab and Islamic world, to mobilize in defense of the mosque and confront the occupation's plans.
