I am writing another book!! It’s about butter cows, derechos, and the future of democracy. 🌽
I'm so glad these guys are cooking. But statistically, the cooking gap is growing, and globally, men are actually doing less cooking than they were even a few years ago. (Except in Italy.) npr.org/sections/health-shot…
I have been arguing for a lot of caution about the hopium being smoked in Iowa. Not that I don't think change can't happen, just that elections are not run on vibes only, they are math. And the math is not great

Here is a rundown of the math. If you want to flip a state you need to register new voters and GOTV. Can you do that with candidates that offer nothing new?

One of the more insidious right wing narratives—which has, tbh, been bought into by a lot of left populists who should know better—is the idea that labor consists of men and management consists of women.

Many important criticisms of her but i hate the lie that abortion is a social issue/neoliberal concern. Abortion bans disproportionately harm low income women. right now, the state denies care to large swaths of the country, entrapping women in poverty/domestic violence
Gloria Steinem got women to tie their gender identity to abortion and the aspiration of corporate success, rather than the low-wage work they were doing (and continue to do).
She successfully got rich women and their daughters to throw working class women under a bus. We could have had a feminism that made sure that working women were unionized and paid.
Instead, Steinem was paid to make sure your daughters wanted to be Sheryl Sandberg.

Feminists are not more prone to mistakes and missteps than the leaders of other liberation struggles. Rather, their mistakes and missteps are given disproportionate attention, significance and publicity.

In 2012, the NYT asked me to write about why the feminist movement never got another Gloria Steinem. I remember 2 things about this piece:
a) the gorgeous Shepard Fairey illustration
b) the last graf:
“Only a diverse group can symbolize a movement,” she said. As for whether there should be another Gloria Steinem, she replied, “I don’t think there should have been a first one.” nytimes.com/2012/03/18/fashi…

The feminist movement that Steinem did much to mainstream and expand is in retreat, with women’s rights and status eroding conspicuously, and I’d like the usual suspects to consider this before they go on their ahistorical little rants about how she was a CIA stooge or whatever.
Breaking News: Gloria Steinem, the feminist crusader who galvanized the modern women’s movement, challenged sexist assumptions and fought for gender equality, has died at 92. nyti.ms/4gS9EkV
It’s easier for a 16yo to get married than it is for a 46yo to get a divorce
I think most people would be surprised to learn how difficult it is to end a marriage in some states.
For @voxdotcom I spoke with women who lived it, and with reformers who think this is the moment it could finally change.

I'm not a politician, but I have had abuse tear apart my family. So, I have been there, and not for one second did I hesitate before calling out the person who did it.
After reading @AshleyRParker's terrific story about the terrible Miller-Moreno story, I have a lot of sympathy for this answer.

Second wave radicals like Shulamith Firestone and Ellen Willis knew they had to break off from the anti-war movement and start independent feminist groups when women tried to speak at an anti-Nixon protest, and men in the crowd yelled “Take her off the stage and fuck her.”
