【PRTIMES】Hiroko Tokumine Returns to Paris for a Second Show - 2026.09.16 Anime, Music, Ryukyu Bingata, and Shigin: “Wa × Fairytale,” Born from Connections Between People and Cultures, Comes to Paris. #HirokoTokumine will present its Spring/Summer 2027 collection during Paris Fashion Week in October 2026. Under the theme “Wa × Fairytale,” the brand brings Lolita fashion and kimono together with Okinawan craft, traditional poetry chanting, anime, and music. The collection reinterprets Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship through contemporary fashion and a fairytale sensibility. At its heart are personal encounters that have opened the way to new creative collaborations. Designer Hiroko Tokumine and bingata artist Haruka Kuniyoshi attended the same high school in Okinawa in the same year, but had no direct contact as students. A school reunion led Tokumine to discover Kuniyoshi’s work, and they connected through Instagram. Kuniyoshi has helped reproduce bingata garments damaged in the Shurijo Castle fire. Now the two are creating an outfit for Paris, combining their skills to bring Okinawan culture to an international audience. Tokumine met shigin performer Hoju Takeshima while helping search for a lost cat in Tokyo’s Arakawa Ward. Only later did she learn of Takeshima’s work. Their shared wish to promote Japanese culture led to a special appearance by the national competition winner. The show also plans to pair bingata clothing with shigin, using Ryukyuan poetry written in classical Chinese. Associate Professor Hayase Maedo of the University of the Ryukyus selected the poetry to complement the dress’s theme. Anime and music provide another creative connection. For KAYA’s “Windmaker,” the opening theme of The Oblivious Saint Can’t Contain Her Power, the brand created a music video dress inspired by the heroine Carolina. The blue and white design features Japanese lace and hand embroidery in gold thread. Its Paris version will retain that vision while introducing a more substantial silhouette. KAYA will perform the song, reuniting the dress and her voice on the runway. The brand is also launching a licensing initiative for its established kimono-inspired dress. Designed to offer a kimono look without complicated dressing, it accommodates both standard apparel fabrics and kimono fabric bolts. Its distinctive construction is registered as a design. A new version will debut in Paris in collaboration with Kyogofuku Miyashita, a Kyoto kimono retailer founded in 1953 that has passed on kimono culture through three generations. Hiroko Tokumine is seeking further licensing and collaboration partners in apparel, kimono, and textiles, aiming to connect its designs with their materials, skills, production capabilities, and sales networks. This return follows the brand’s Paris debut in March 2024, when it combined Japanese traditions with Lolita fashion and staged quick costume changes from Lolita outfits to kimono dresses. A subsequent show in Japan brought more performers and creators into the collaboration. In 2026, those connections continue to grow: Paris will be both a place to present their work and a starting point for new partnerships in Japan and abroad.
