underrated advantage of legacy systems: usually you have direct contact with some knowledgeable stakeholders nothing better than solving a problem and actually knowing it's real and has impact

My fallback plan is always to just go back to Enterprise dev and maintain some 5 year old Java stuff that keeps the lights on

My version of "it's so over/we're so back" the bar for interesting stuff is so high/the bar for a basic, good job is so low

We're starting tonight and hack the whole weekend. Come by :)
We've been so inspired by the hacker culture in SF. Just getting together and build with no agenda and sharing our progress. @dominik_scherm & me are organising a hack weekend March 8-10. Come any time, hack long as you want, sat & sun evening demos. partiful.com/e/HJEbop82gUNqK…

main takeaway from my career so far: we need to go deeper it's really unfulfilling to just get better at more and more levels of abstractions treating everything below your framework as a black box gives you a speed up, but does not build true competence and competitive adv.

Shoggoth by @thenetrunna is "a peer-to-peer, anon network for publishing/distributing code, ML models, datasets and papers." Sounds awesome! But also way too mysterious. What is it actually made of? Lets put on our Software Architecture-hat and dig in!

In Seth Godins book "The Practice" he uses this examples and says that no one learns to draw the owl from step-by-step instructions. His example of what to do is an analogy to learning juggling: just practice throwing! Throw and let it fall... Throw... and let it fall...

Memex is in public beta (again) We closed down our signups earlier this year when we launched Memex' collaboration features. Over the past 12 months we've been working hard to polish the product and if you haven't used Memex in a while you may want to try it again. For quick summary of what we've added last year you can watch the attached video or read on. Some highlights: 👯‍♂️ Collaboratively curate, annotate and discuss websites, PDFs and videos. (see video) 📣 Share and collaborate with people who don't use the Memex extension with our new web reader. xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… 🤖 AI assistant to summarise & ask questions about websites, PDFs, YouTube videos and text/video sections. xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… ▶️ Video timestamp annotations, including smart notes xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… 📸 Frame snapshot annotations on Youtube xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… ✍🏽 Annotate illustrations on PDFs xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… 💎 Obsidian & Logseq live sync xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… 🌆 Image Support for annotations xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… 🌙 Dark & Light mode redesign xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… 🐦 Use Memex as a CRM for Twitter & Telegram: Organise/search/filter profiles and annotate chat logs xitter.cf/memexgarden/stat… + 200 bug fixes and dozens of quality of life improvements. What's next? 🔓 Private spaces with email invites (in polish) 📱 Native in-browser annotations & search on mobile (in progress) 🗂️ Nesting Spaces for better organisation (in design) Transferrable Lifetime Subscription Deal We've also launched a limited offer for a transferrable lifetime subscription. For $400 you can use all Memex features until you hopefully die at an old age - and if you don't need it anymore you can gift or sell it to someone else. We wanted to make our early supporters benefit greatly from the improvements to the product we're going to make even if they stop using Memex. Our hope is that it'll also help us stay more independent from venture capital pressure as a Steward Owned business. For more info, check out our website (in our bio)
You can now use Memex to organise & segment Twitter profiles, and annotate chat histories. Also works for Telegram!

Near the start of SWTOR, an engineer came up to me to ask what sort of Item Creation tool I wanted to set stats on items, and I responded ‘Excel’. (1/2)
i want 'programmers looking down on spreadsheets' discourse but like the opposite, like spreadsheet people looking down on programmers 'how can programmers stand not seeing the concrete data they're operating on' 'how can programmers tolerate not being able to live edit code'

I am translating confusing German rules to software for a living. "Oh it's easy, you just take the Ding and put it in the Bums and filter by Zeugs and finally you get a Lastkraftwagen"

Software development doctrine seems to assume a small team of highly self-motivated A players with infinite access to domain experts and tons of time for rework

Every day I'm getting closer & closer to natural real-time conversations with AI. Still a bit of latency but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. 😏

You made it through last week, you'll make it through this one as well What are your goals for this week? What do you plan to achieve? List it all down. Take a deep breath, hold it and exhale, move at your own pace We're ALL gonna make it

Organizations divide complex systems into apparently simple parts not because complex systems are actually dividable into simple parts but because doing so is necessary to work with them at all.
