Really important contribution explaining something counterintuitive yet crucial: why do labor reforms do not map cleanly onto government ideology?
The right and center-right keep winning elections in Latin America, and labor reform is central to their agenda. Why do these reforms vary so much across governments? In a new @LAPSjournal paper with @oliviaberisso23 and @tomas_divizia, we address this puzzle 🧵 1/3

Globalized State-led Development is out @CUP_PoliSci @RBlaifeder! I revisit the developmental state for an era of global capital and democracy, asking why governments support the global investments of national firms. Brazil is at the center, comparative engagement with China.

Globalization did not end state-led development – it changed how governments pursue it.
In her new book, Globalized State-led Development, Kellogg Faculty Fellow Jazmín Sierra examines how countries such as Brazil and China have adapted industrial policy by supporting national firms’ expansion abroad to gain access to markets, knowledge, and technology.
At a recent Kellogg book launch, Sierra discussed the book with Ben Ross Schneider of MIT and Dan Slater of the University of Michigan, who highlighted its contributions to debates about industrial policy, development, and democracy.

Bookmarking this seminal contribution to understand the politically crucial yet severely understudied 21st century politicization of rural interests in Latin America. A must read for scholars of political economy in Latin America and beyond.
Happy to announce that Shocks, Democracy and Rural Unrest joint with @jmangonnet has just came out with @CambridgeUP and is free to download for 4 weeks here:

Such an important topic and sounds like a stellar book from the blurbs on the back. I'm looking forward to reading it!

Felicitaciones @jazsierra!

State-led development is alive and well, as @jazsierra demonstrates in her brilliant new book, Globalized State-led Development (@CambridgeUP).
Governments in the Global South actively create homegrown multinational corporations as a deliberate strategy of structural economic transformation. Built on fifteen months of fieldwork in Brazil, an original dataset of Brazilian multinationals, and over 150 interviews, the book also shows its broader reach through an in-depth case study of China.
The magnitude of the contribution led Peter Evans, one of the key figures of the state-led development tradition, to call it "a gift." Read, assign, and enjoy this wonderful book!

Incredibly honored to receive @APSAtweets Dahl Award for the best scholarship on democracy for my book Incumbency Bias. The timing couldn't be better with my mentor, hero and advisor Sue Stokes as APSA president.
