Robin Hood stole from the rich. This one just hands Wall Street to anyone with a phone. Drew it so I can say I called it.
Blockchain isn't a casino
Pumpfun taught people the wrong lesson about crypto. Telegram is quietly teaching a better one.
What normies actually see
Ask someone outside crypto what blockchain is and you'll probably hear "gambling." Pumpfun has a lot to do with that. More than 7 million tokens launched there between January 2024 and March 2025, and only 97,000 of them kept more than $1,000 in liquidity. 98.6% collapsed soon after launch. If that's your first look at crypto, of course you won't trust it.
What blockchain is for
Blockchain should make moving and owning money as easy as sending a message. You don't need a memecoin for that. You need something people use every day, and Telegram is already building it.
What Telegram has done this year
Telegram became TON's largest validator in April 2026. In June, Toncoin was renamed Gram ($GRAM), the name used in the original 2018 whitepaper.
The network also got faster. Transactions now finalize in under a second instead of about 10, and a basic transfer costs around $0.0005.
People are using it
There's now more than $1.43B in USDT on TON, and people use it for payments and sending money home. TON Mini Apps reach over 500M people a month inside Telegram. Next is a self-custodial Gram Wallet built into Telegram itself, rolling out to more than a billion users.
It's still early
TON's TVL is only about $56.6M, which is small. The second half of 2026 will show whether this becomes lasting on-chain activity or just another hype cycle.
Where adoption will come from
I don't think the next memecoin will bring the next billion people into crypto. Sending a dollar in under a second, almost for free, inside an app they already open every day might.

coinbase just beat opus 4.5 at catching fraud with a small free model they trained for less than a nice dinner
they took qwen3.5-9b, an open model anyone can download, and trained it on their own fraud history
training ran on ONE gpu. under $100 total. my last food delivery order cost more
on their fraud test it beat opus 4.5 by 7.5 points on precision and 12 points on recall
that test was 16,140 real transactions with 813 confirmed fraud cases. not vibes, receipts
live answers came back in 0.683s vs 1.515s for opus. 55% faster. the scammer barely finished typing
and the ai fraud reviewer they built cut fraudulent transactions 30% in a/b tests
brian armstrong's take: big models are amazing generalists, specialists win the narrow jobs
so the future might be less one giant brain and more a group chat of tiny nerds who each know one thing really well
would you let a $100 model guard your money? why or why not
We were able to fine tune an open weight model (Qwen3.5-9B) on proprietary internal data at @coinbase, and it out performed frontier models, at much lower cost and speed, for a specialized task (fraud prevention in this case).
I think we'll see more of this pattern inside companies. The frontier models are amazing generalists. But increasingly you'll see specialist models out perform on more narrow tasks, either working on teams, or by themselves.
We're making it easy to fine tune models internally for our employees. We even have a skill for it in our internal harness that makes it easy to spin these up and start training them:
"/fine-tune-and-serve-llm I want to fine-tune Qwen for payments risk review. help me get started"
I imagine we'll have some backend services that could be replaced entirely by this new architecture.
