during the rape of nanking japanese soldiers came to Ginling Girls College, where refugees from all over the city were sheltering, and demanded 10 women to be handed over as "comfort women" (sex slaves) A group of prostitutes volunteered to be taken in order to spare the virginal, pure collegiates. and because they were "very base" (from the diary of Mary Vautrin, a missionary there) people thought of it as much less of a tragedy Of course they were never heard from again. The comfort women were known to have been treated horrifically, and most were shot or otherwise disposed of at the end of the war to cover up the atrocities committed. It's funny back then prostitutes were mostly either trafficked or born into the trade. these were women who had suffered greatly already, who took on still more suffering in an act that could only be called angelic imagine drawing the shittiest cards, persevering in that life, even making an enormous sacrifice in order to try and do some good, and getting no sympathy or credit for any of it, only people thanking their stars that it was you who suffered in the end and not someone who was luckier to begin with. Lucky, and therefore more valuable this was dramatized in a movie called Flowers of War but i think it will always stay with me in case i ever feel like the world is fair
